Albany Devils News Release
Rewind:
Wednesday, Sharks 6 vs. DEVILS 1
Stephen Gionta was the lone goal scorer for the Lowell Devils in a 6-1 loss to the Worcester Sharks on Wednesday at Tsongas Arena. Gionta's goal tied the contest at 4:46 of the first period, nearly two minutes after Mike Iggulden opened the scoring for the Sharks. Riley Armstrong notched two of his team's three goals in the second period as the Sharks pulled away. Lowell did not receive a power play in the contest, but went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
Friday, SOUND TIGERS 3 vs. Devils 2
Though the Devils fought back twice to tie the game, a late power play goal by Trevor Smith gave the Bridgeport Sound Tigers the 3-2 win. Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond struck first at 6:54 of the opening frame on his second goal of the season. After Bridgeport came back to take a 2-1 lead in the third, Barry Tallackson knotted the contest midway through the period with his 15th goal of the year. The Devils were perfect on eight straight penalty kills, until Smith converted on the Sound Tigers' ninth man-advantage.
Saturday, FALCONS 3 vs. Devils 1
Noah Clarke's power play goal at 8:51 of the second period was the only offense the Devils could muster, falling 3-1 to the Springfield Falcons on Saturday at the MassMutual Center. Rob Schremp broke a scoreless tie just 4:42 into the contest before Jonas Almtorp's first goal of season - coming at 3:31 of the second - proved to be the eventual game-winner. Clarke's marker pulled Lowell within one goal, but Stephen Werner gave the Falcons a comfortable two-goal edge once again with 16:36 left in regulation.
Coming Up
The Lowell Devils finish a three-game road stretch in the front half of a home-and-home series against the Manchester Monarchs. The two teams will face off at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday, February 15 before playing at Tsongas Arena the following afternoon. The Devils had been perfect in the first four meetings against the Monarchs, but Manchester took the last decision, 4-0, on January 25. The Monarchs have lost four of their last six games, but have been able to maintain their hold on fifth place in the Atlantic Division. Manchester right wing Teddy Purcell is 3rd in the league in scoring with 57 points (16g, 41a) and tied for third in assists! . The Monarchs own the top power play unit in the AHL with a success rate of 24.7% (56-of-227).
Lowell will take the ice for a Sunday matinee against the Providence Bruins on February 17 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Devils have only been able to take away one win in seven head-to-head games this season against the Bruins. Providence still reigns as the top team in the American Hockey League at 37-10-2-1 despite losing its last two contests. Right wing Jeff Hoggan leads the league with a +26 plus/minus rating. The Bruins are 21-1-1-1 when notching the first goal.
Alumni Report
Former Lowell Devil forward Dave Clarkson has registered four assists in his last three games for the New Jersey Devils. Defenseman Andy Greene notched a helper in Saturday's 6-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Mike Mottau, who patrolled the blueline in Lowell last season, scored a goal in New Jersey's 3-2 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.
