Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD - It took an improbable six-run, 9th inning comeback and an additional run in the 13th to get the win, but somehow the Sanford Mainers (25-15) pulled off a wild comeback to win 9-8.
The Moose scored the game winner to defeat North Adams (22-19) in the 13th inning after Jordan Powell doubled to get aboard with two men away. Sam Stauble (Southern Maine) delivered with an infield single, scoring Powell from third base after he advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Although the Moose walked-off, Sanford took all the momentum in the game in their six-run 9th. Trailing 8-2, the Mainers offensive onslaught began with Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) hitting a lead-off double. Hughes seemingly crushed the double to left field out of spite, after the SteepleCats reliever put a fastball just over the top of his head, prompting Hughes to enter into a staring contest with Logan Austin (Texas Arlington).
Mike Landestoy (Texas Christian) singled in Hughes to make the score 8-3, as he was promptly joined by Chris Gaetano (Monmouth) aboard via a base-hit. Powell knocked in two runs on a single, and Stauble walked to get aboard too. Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) delivered an RBI-single, his second pinch-hit, RBI-single this month, to make the score 8-5. Zach Jancarski (Maryland) delivered another RBI-single, before Hughes delivered his second hit of the inning. Hughes' base hit allowed a run to score, and Jancarski rounded third, diving into the plate only to be tagged out in a close play that drew an argument from Sanford Manager Chris Morris.
Sanford tagged North Adams reliever Austin with four runs, four earned, four hits in just a third of inning. SteepleCats reliever Brian Stepniak (Hartford) didn't fare much better, allowing two runs on a hit and a walk, without recording an out. Jared Habershaw (Franklin Pierce) took the loss in the 13th, after an inning-and-two-thirds of work.
Joe Orlando (Binghamton) earned the win for the Moose, allowing just one hit in five innings of relief work, with six strike outs, saving the Mainers bullpen prior to their doubleheader on July 30.
The Mainers play the first game of a doubleheader tomorrow, July 30 at noon when they face the Valley Blue Sox in a make-up game at Goodall Park. Sanford will then travel to Keene, New Hampshire to face the Keene Swamp Bats at Alumni Field for a 6:30 PM first pitch. Both games can be heard on the NECBL Broadcast Network, while the latter contest can also be heard on the Legends in Sanford, 1220 AM and 102.3 FM as well as 104.1 FM and 1220 AM ESPN Keene.
