Mystic Split Doubleheader

July 30, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) - Mystic Schooners News Release

Game 1: Newport 8 - Mystic 2

Do to weather the Schooners were forced to play a doubleheader Saturday, the first of two games was played at 12PM versus the Newport Gulls at Cardines Field.

The Schooners jumped out to an early lead versus the Gulls but were unable to sustain any offensive production and ultimately fell 8-2.

Rich Slenker hit his third home run of the season in the first inning and Ryan Ramiz would come and score in the 4th inning on a wild pitch. The Schooners left a man on base in each of the final four innings but were unable to bring any of them across the plate.

The Schooners had to quickly forget about this game, as they would take on the Ocean State Waves in the final home game of the season for game two of the doubleheader.

Game 2: Mystic 16 - Ocean State 0 (7 innings)

The Schooners jumped off to a great start as two hits put them up 4-0 in the first inning. Ryan Ramiz and Nick Mascelli walked which brought up Chace Lunceford, he blasted his fifth home run of the season into the woods in right field. Martin Figueroa hit a solo home run two batters later, that just got over the fence in right-center field giving the Schooners a 4-0 lead.

A Martin Figueroa RBI single to right field in the 3rd inning scored Mascelli from second base and gave the Schooners a 5-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Schooners would add two more runs off a Chase Lunceford double scoring Mascelli and a Martin Figueroa double scoring Lunceford making it 7-0.

The Schooners would blow open the game in the 6th inning scoring nine runs off of five hits and an error. The Schooners would bat around the order during the inning and score the most runs in an inning this year.

The game would be decided after the top of the 7th when rain started coming down harder and home plate umpire, Kieth Peterson, deemed the field unsafe to play.

The Schooners improved to 26-15 on the year and have three games remaining in the regular season. They will travel to Forges Field tomorrow to take on the Plymouth Pilgrims. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30PM.
