Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt.- The North Adams SteepleCats scored four runs in the fifth inning on Saturday to top the Vermont Mountaineers 4-3 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
Starter Michael Fairchild (Olympia, Wash./Azusa Pacific) pitched a gem for the Mountaineers, but his defense couldn't support him. Fairchild threw a complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Fairchild ran into some trouble in the fifth inning, and the situation was worsened by three errors in the inning.
Third baseman CJ Price (Naples, Fla./Cornell) kicked the fifth off with a double, and then the next two batters reached base consecutively, setting up Nick Riotto (Washington, Pa./Penn State) to knock an RBI single. That put the SteepleCats on the board, but they were far from done. The next batter, Daniel Holst (Durango, Colo./SE Missouri St.), hit a single to left field, and the Mountaineers' left fielder committed two errors on the play, allowing three runs to score. Outside of the fifth inning, the Cats' offense was silent. Those four runs, though, were all they needed to get past Vermont.
The Mountaineers scored first in the game when Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall) knocked an RBI single in the first inning, scoring Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri), who walked earlier in the frame.
Vermont then got two runs back in the sixth inning. Ryan Fineman (Westlake Village Calif./Indiana) launched a solo home run off of the left field scoreboard. Two batters later, Ezell reached on a fielder's choice, and scored on a passed ball.
Starter Brazton Wilks (Sugar Land, Texas/Abilene Christian) went five innings for North Adams, allowing one run on four hits. Wilks walked seven batters and struck out four. The lefty picked up the win, moving him to 7-1 on the season. Closer Brian Stepniak (Dallas, Pa./Hartford) got the save for the 'Cats, after pitching scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Fairchild suffered the loss for the Mountaineers.
Vermont falls to 18-23 on the season. With the final day of the regular season just two days away, the Mountaineers are now tied with the Upper Valley Nighthawks and Winnipesaukee Muskrats for the fourth and final playoff spot in the NECBL Northern Division. Vermont will be in action again on Sunday, when they'll travel to Holyoke, Mass. to take on the Valley Blue Sox. First pitch is set for 5:05 PM at MacKenzie Stadium. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online though The NECBL Broadcast Network.
