Rochester Honkers News Release

The Rochester Honkers had revenge on their minds Thursday as the season opening series traveled to Rochester for the Honkers season opener. The Honkers wanted to get their first win of the season, and force a rubber match on Friday's final game of the series. The MoonDogs had other plans however, toppling the Honkers by a score of 13-7.

Matt Strahm (Fr, Neosho County CC) was given the ball to start the opener for the Honkers. Strahm started strong, striking out six batters in the first four innings, before running into control problems, a homerun by Cody Ferrell, and a huge grand slam by Zach Borenstein. Borenstein had five RBI on the night.

The Honkers pitching staff struggled with control all night, walking 11 batters and allowing 13 runs on just six MoonDog hits. Between the walks and four errors in the field the Honkers seven run output was toppled. The Honkers did manage to find their stride at the plate, with homeruns from Jimmie Koch (Fr, Florida Tech) and normally pitcher, turned designated hitter, Jordan Jakubov (RsJR, Kansas) in the second and third innings respectively. Second basemen Davy Wright (So, Texas Christian) managed to get his second extra base hit of the season, driving a triple over the center fielder's head in the first inning.

Matt Mazzoni got the win for the MoonDogs, his official line was 6.0 innings pitched, three runs on four hits, well striking out five. Strahm got the loss for the Honkers, going 4.2 innings, allowing three this, for seven runs, and six strikeouts.

The two teams will finish out the three game series tomorrow, Friday June 3, at 7:05pm. The game will be played in Mankato at Franklin Rogers Park. Robert Hanson (Fr, Vanderbilt) will be on the mound for the Honkers and Kyle Ritcher will go for Mankato

The Honkers next home game is Saturday night, June 4, when they start a two game set with the Willmar Stingers. Saturday's game is at 7:05pm followed by a Sunday matinee at 1:05pm.
