Green Bay Rockers News Release
FrogVille, WI - The Green Bay Bullfrogs take the season opening series but drop the finale 7-3 at home against the La Crosse Loggers. After getting some excellent pitching in the first two games of the series, the bullpen allowed two runs in the seventh and three in the ninth as the Bullfrogs fall to 2-1 on the year.
Bullfrogs starter Josh Martin of Samford allowed the first two hitters to reach in the second inning after a single by Mike Reeves and a double by Zach Miller. The Loggers played fundamental baseball after that driving in the two runs without a hit. Cameron Flynn had an RBI ground out that moved Miller to third. Then Ethan Gross picked up his first RBI this season with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Loggers put at least one runner on in each of the next four innings but Josh Martin was able to avoid any further damage. The 6' 5" Alabama native touched the low 90s with his fastball and featured a tight curveball early in the count to get a number of swings and misses as he stuck out five in his Bullfrogs debut. The Samford junior threw six innings allowing five hits and two runs in the no decision. He could have gone longer but the Northwoods league pitch count restrictions kept him from going out for the seventh.
Green Bay, finding themselves down for the first time this season retook the lead in the fourth with three two-out runs. Loggers' starter Harrison Cooney allowed a lead off hit to Joe Betcher and a pair of walks to Chris Migani and Robert Williams. With the bases loaded, Green Bay's shortstop Alec Mehrten earned a painful RBI when he was hit in the hand with the first pitch. On the next pitch to Dan Gerow, the catcher drove a base hit through the left side for two RBI giving the 'Frogs a 3-2 lead.
Greg Blohowiak came in relief in the seventh inning and gave up an RBI double to Thomas McCarthy after a single and sac bunt. Billy Moon entered the game for the Bullfrogs after that having just arrived in Green Bay earlier that day. With two outs he threw a wild pitch to allow the go ahead run to score.
In the ninth, Cory Kyle entered the game and allowed three insurance runs to cross the plate highlighted by a two-run homer by Cameron Flynn. Robert Williams led the bottom of the ninth off with a single, but La Crosse reliever Trevor Teykl retired the next three hitters to give the Loggers the 7-3 win.
Drew Bradshaw will start for the Bullfrogs on Saturday night in their first road game of the year at the Wisconsin Woodchucks with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 pm. Green Bay will be back at Joannes Stadium on Monday for a three game series with the Battle Creek Bombers.
