MoonDogs Sweep Honkers in Season Opening Series
June 3, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release
The Rochester Honkers were looking for their first win of the season, and to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Mankato MoonDogs on Friday night, but the MoonDogs had other plans. Mankato came from behind early to sweep the Honkers with a score of 16-6.
The inning started off well with a walk issued to first basemen Jake Marasco (RsSo, Kansas), the walk was followed up by the second homerun of the season for right fielder Jimmie Koch(Fr, Florida Tech). Koch's homerun put the Honkers up by two, but was not all for the boys in teal. A few good bounces for the Honkers, and a few walks later, it was 6-0 Honkers.
The Honkers elation quickly died down, when starting pitcher Robert Hansen (Fr, Vanderbilt), hit three straight batters, and then ran into more problems with control, walking. Before the inning was over, the MoonDogs had tied it up at six.
The Honkers woes would continue after the second inning, as the MoonDog bats came out hard. Mankato got homeruns out of Scott Sommerfeld and Blair Moore. Moore had four RBI on the night, while going 2-3.
Hansen was chased from the ballgame after only one complete inning, failing to get an out in the second. Hansen did not allow a hit, however did allow six runs, four of them earned. Reliever Jordan Jakubov (RsJr, Kansas) was given the loss, after pitching four innings, allowing six hits and four runs, three of them earned. He did strike out five batters in his four innings however.
MoonDog reliever Jeff Rohrbach got the win for the MoonDogs, after starter Kyle Richter was chased one and a third into the game. Rohrbach was lights out, not allowing a Honker run on six hits in 7.2 innings of relief. Rohrback struck out five batters, and did not walk one.
The two teams will make on their separate ways after the three game set. The Honkers will come home to a two game series against Willmar. First pitch is 7:05 pm, Saturday, June 4. Nick Dolsky (So, Nebraska) will be on the hill for the Honkers. Dolsky helped the Honkers out of a jam on Thursday's home opener, pitching a third of an inning.
