Mississippi Braves News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Montgomery Biscuits (22-13) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and beat the Mississippi Braves (17-17) in Saturday night's series opener at Riverwalk Stadium, 4-3.
The loss spoiled the longest outing of the season for Patrick Weigel. The right-hander, coming back from Tommy John Surgery, dealt 3.1 innings of shutout ball on one hit, striking out four and walking just one.
The M-Braves had prior opportunities, but jumped on the scoreboard first time in the top of the fourth inning. Tyler Neslony smashed a leadoff triple off the wall in right-center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Wilkins. The next batter, Ryan Casteel, belted an opposite-field home run to right-center making it 2-0 M-Braves. The homer was Casteel's third on the season and second off of Montgomery left-hander Josh Fleming (W, 4-2)
Alejandro Salazar led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to straightaway center. The 417-foot blast put the Braves up 3-0.
Jeremy Walker (L, 1-4) relieved Weigel in the fourth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. Montgomery picked up just their second hit of the game in the sixth inning, but it was erased on an outfield assist by Drew Waters.
Josh Lowe started the bottom of the seventh inning with a single against Walker. Rain began to fall at Riverwalk Stadium and the game changed from that point forward. Dalton Kelly followed with double placing runners at second and third. Jesus Sanchez hit a dribbler down the third base line that resulted in a single scoring Lowe. The next batter, Tristan Gray, attempting to sacrifice, hit one back to Walker, but his throw to third sailed past Luis Valenzuela. Valenzuela's throw back to the infield struck Sanchez in the head, allowing Kelly to score. Jermaine Palacios pinch ran for Sanchez and he scored on a single by Lucious Fox. Brett Sulivan brought home the go-ahead run on a groundout to second and Montgomery led 4-3.
Walker was saddled with the loss, giving up four runs, three earned on five hits over 3.2 innings, walking none and striking out two. Claudio Custodio added a scoreless inning for the Braves in the eighth and hasn't given up a run in four games and 7.1 innings.
The game had a 14-minute rain delay in the top of the eighth inning. The M-Braves put two runners on base, but each were left stranded. Against Montgomery closer Phoenix Sanders, the M-Braves threatened to tie the game in the ninth. As rain began falling again, Valenzuela reached on a fielding error to begin the ninth and then advanced to third on a single from Salazar. Ray-Patrick Didder hit a grounder to third and Gray tagged out Valenzuela for the first out. Sanders struck out Waters and Lien to end the game.
The M-Braves stranded eight on base Saturday night and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Waters finished 2-for-5 with a triple, his league-leading 19th extra-base hit and 15th multi-hit game this season. He leads the league with a .345 batting average. With Casteel and Salazar's homers, the M-Braves have hit five over their last two games.
Game two between the Biscuits and M-Braves is a Sunday matinee at Riverwalk Stadium. LHP Joey Wentz (1-1, 3.90) starts for the M-Braves against a to be determined starter for the Biscuits.
