Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Sioux City Musketeers continued their strong play at home, and got three points from Jake Montgomery and Adam Johnson to defeat the Dubuque Fighting Saints, 6-2, Saturday night at the Tyson Events Center. Dubuque fell for the second straight night, and dropped to 16-7-1 on the season heading into a holiday break.

Dubuque opened the scoring Saturday evening. Jason Ford connected on a 5-on-3 powerplay only 5:42 into the game. With two Sioux City players in the penalty box, Dubuque connected late in the two-man-advantage. Jacob Benson got the puck in front of the goal and jammed a shot on net. The puck bounced around, and Ford swept in, roofing a shot over the fallen netminder Kyle Hayton to make it 1-0 Dubuque.

Sioux City would strike on the powerplay to tie the game late in the period at the 17:34 mark. Brandon Hawkins posted up on the right wing side half-boards and received a pass from Tyler Mueller. Hawkins unloaded a slapshot that blew past Fighting Saints goalie Hayden Stewart to tie the game at one.

In the second period, the Musketeers would score twice more. Adam Johnson struck early in the period on a beautiful move around Stewart. Sioux City capitalized on a turnover and Jake Montgomery chipped a pass to Johnson. With Stewart charging out of his net, Johnson made a one-handed deke around Stewart and snuck it past the goaltender's glove to make it 2-1.

Sioux City would score once more before the period ended. Montgomery added his second point of the game when the puck bounced to him on the right doorstep. After his initial shot was blocked, Montgomery went to the goal and the puck found him, as he punched in a goal with only 45 seconds left in the period to make it 3-1.

Sioux City would add to its lead with three third period goals. Dubuque had numerous chances early in the period, but Sioux City struck again. A shot deflected wide off the end boards and popped right to Joe Snively who scored to make it 4-1. Johnson was setup beautifully by Montgomery on a two-on-one for his second goal on the game minutes later to make it 5-1.

Dubuque would cut into the Sioux City lead with a Max McHugh goal at 16:44 to make it 5-2, but in the closing minutes, Cedric LaCroix deflected a point shot past Stewart to close of the game with a score of 6-2.

The Fighting Saints outshot the Musketeers 34-26 in the losing effort. Hayton stopped 32 shots for Sioux City to earn the win. Dubuque was without forwards Seamus Malone who was suspended, as well as forwards Shane Eiserman and Shane Kavanagh who did not travel with the team due to illness.

The Fighting Saints will be off next weekend for a brief holiday break before returning to the Mystique Community Ice Center on Friday, December 27 as they host the Green Bay Gamblers.
