Monterey Bay Battles Sacramento Republic FC in NorCal Derby at Cardinale Stadium
August 4, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Monterey Bay FC News Release
SEASIDE, California - Monterey Bay F.C. (7-9-6, 27 points) remains in action for an important derby match at home against Sacramento Republic FC (11-3-8, 41 points) in Week 22 of the 2023 USL Championship regular season, presented by Prep Club Society. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT will be broadcast locally via KION on Central Coast CW (35.1 over the air, channel 14 Xfinity), with live streaming available on ESPN+.
Monterey Bay and their fellow Northern California rivals from Sacramento last met at Heart Health Park, home of Republic FC, less than two months ago on June 17. Morey Doner assisted Christian Volesky for the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory for the Crisp-and-Kelp over the hosts, Sacramento's first and only defeat at home of the 2023 campaign to date. Overall, the all-time head-to-head matchup is dead-even at 2-2-0, each club with a win and loss at their home venue, in addition to an even goal difference with four goals apiece. Entering the match on the weekend, barring a draw, one of these teams will have the edge in the all-time matchup when the dust settles in Seaside.
With just one win since the Club's upset victory in Sacramento seven weeks ago, Monterey Bay will be desperate to regain its form from an unbeaten June and turn the season back around while there's still time left to do so. And one piece of the puzzle that the Club is relying on to provide a spark on the weekend is new signing Rafa Baca - who is officially expected to make his much-awaited debut in the match.
For the current number one team in the Western Conference, this fixture means getting even on the year. With the Union handing Republic FC its aforementioned first home loss of the season, it is safe to say the visitors will enter the match with a chip on their shoulder and revenge on the mind.
