Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SYDNEY- A game that saw its story built around the return of an offensive superstar would turn out to be highlighted by goaltending.
Former Screaming Eagle Pierre-Luc Dubois made his return to Centre 200 on Thursday and picked up two assists in the contest But it was the goalies who were the as Samuel Montembeault stopped all 21 Eagles shots in a 3-0 shutout for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. Kevin Mandolese was none too shabby himself, turning aside 30 shots from Blainville-Boisbriand.
Period one was all Armada, as Blainville stormed the Eagles zone and outshot the home side 17-3. Both former Eagles in the in the visiting lineup would collect points. Tobie Bisson would pick up an assist on the game's first marker, passing it to Alex Barré-Boulet who saw his shot tipped by Joel Teasdale. Then Dubois would earn a helper on a power play marker by Barré-Boulet. The Armada had earned the man advantage after a cross-check by Giovanni Fiore on Yvan Mongo.
It looked as though the middle frame would follow a similar pattern as Dubois would come in on a breakaway in the early going and the Armada outshot Cape Breton 4-0 in the first four minutes of the period. This time the Eagles would weather the storm to outshoot Blainville 13-7, but couldn't solve Montembeault despite earning their first three power plays of the game.
The Armada tightened things up in the third period, outshooting Cape Breton 10-5 with the best Eagle opportunity being a denied breakaway on Massimo Carozza. In the final two minutes Eagles coach Marc-André Dumont elected to lift his netminder for an extra attacker but could not find a way past Montembeault. Barré-Boulet hit the empty net for his third point of the night and to help seal the Blainville victory.
Bisson would go +1 in addition to the assist against his old club. Mathias Laferrière, acquired in the Dubois trade by Cape Breton registered three hits in the contest. Giovanni Fiore led the Eagle attack with five shots on goal.
