Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - Matthew Highmore had a goal and two assists and Alex D'Orio made 27 saves as the Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the Halifax Mooseheads, 4-2, Wednesday at Harbour Station.
Julien Gauthier and Spencer Smallman chipped in with a goal and an assist for Saint John (41-13-5-1). Bokondji Imama also scored in the team's second win in four days against the Mooseheads.
Jared McIsaac and Keigan Goetz found the net for Halifax (26-30-2-3), which have lost three straight.
The Sea Dogs scored the opening goal more than eleven minutes into the game on the power play.
Gauthier took a pass in the left circle, faked a slap shot and found Highmore down low on the right side. Saint John's leading point-getter slapped a one-timer past a helpless Alexis Gravel in the Mooseheads' goal.
Eighty seconds later, Highmore set up Gauthier.
The overager carried the puck down the right side, and fed a pass out on the short side to Gauthier inside the right circle. The Carolina Hurricanes' prospect, who missed Saint John's previous five games, snapped a quick one-timer over Gravel's blocker for another power play goal.
McIsaac cut the Sea Dogs' lead to 2-1 with a man advantage strike two-and-a-half minutes into the second.
Maxime Fortier settled the puck at the left point and found McIsaac in the left circle. The second overall pick in the 2016 QMJHL Entry Draft blasted a one-timer past goalie Alex D'Orio.
Smallman got that one back just over a minute later, taking a pass in the left circle and rifling a shot past the blocker of Gravel.
But the visitors responded again with eight minutes left in the period, as Goetz took a drop pass in the slot and ripped a wrist shot through D'Orio's legs.
Saint John led 3-2 after forty minutes.
Imama gave the Sea Dogs some breathing room nine minutes into the third period.
A shot from the right point by Chase Stewart was blocked in front of the goal. Highmore found the loose puck and swung it into the left circle where Imama whistled a wrist shot over Gravel's glove.
D'Orio earned the win and was named third star. Gravel made 22 saves in the loss.
Highmore took first star while Gauthier's two points made him second star in front of 3,322 fans in attendance.
Saint John's next game is Friday, March 3rd, at 7 p.m. against the Rimouski Oceanic at Harbour Station. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station Box Office, or fans can save money and buy online [https://www.tickets.harbourstation.ca/Online/default.asp].
