Iowa Cubs News Release

Lou Montanez smacked a go-ahead 2-RBI double off Memphis reliever Jason Buursma as the I-Cubs staged yet another late-inning rally to upend the Redbirds 5-2 Monday afternoon at Principal Park.

Memphis starter P.J. Walters kept the Iowa bats quiet through the first six innings, holding the Cubs to one run on an RBI-groundout from Matt Camp in the bottom of the fourth.

Down 1-0, the Redbirds tallied a run in the fifth on an RBI-single from Ramon Vazquez and another in the sixth on an RBI-double from Mark Carpenter to take the lead at 2-1.

With the lead intact in the bottom of the seventh, Walters retired Camp as the lead off hitter. The pitcher then gave up a single to Chris Robinson and issued back-to-back walks to Bobby Scales and Fernando Perez before being pulled for Buursma.

Montanez took the third pitch from the side-arm reliever and deposited it into left-center field. The ball split the defense and brought home both Robinson and Scales to put Iowa up 3-2. The offense wasn't done as Brad Snyder greeted new Memphis reliever Rich Rundles with a 2-RBI single to cushion the Iowa lead at 5-2.

Iowa starting pitcher Thomas Diamond had his best start of the season. Diamond contributed six solid innings, allowing only two runs on six hits while striking out seven.

John Gaub (1-0, 2.16) picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings in relief.

Scott Maine picked up his third save of the season, shutting down the Redbirds in the final inning.

Iowa starts the second leg of its eight-game homestand Tuesday night at Principal Park. The Albuqueruqe Isotopes will be in town for four games. Isotopes LH Dana Eveland (2-0, 3.65) will face Cubs RH Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-1, 10.80). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
