WINNIPEG, MB - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the Manitoba Moose on Saturday at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, MB, by a final score of 5-2. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 3-7 overall this season and with a .300 points percentage, currently sit alone in eighth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Cleveland's Oliver Bjorkstrand started the scoring with an even-strength tally at 7:44 of the opening frame, assisted by Markus Hannikainen. Manitoba responded, however, with four unanswered tallies, from Scott Glennie at 10:23 of the first on the power-play, Brendan Lemieux at 15:21 of the opening period at even-strength, Glennie again at five-on-five at 16:57 of the opening stanza, and J.C. Lipon at 4:04 of the second at five-on-five, to claim a 4-1 advantage.
Monsters captain Ryan Craig netted his second power-play goal in as many games at 9:05 of the middle frame thanks to feeds from Daniel Zaar and T.J. Tynan, but Moose forward Quinton Howden sealed a Manitoba win with a power-play marker at 16:44 of the second to make it 5-2 for the home team.
Joonas Korpisalo stopped 21 of the 26 pucks he faced in the first 36:44 of the game between the pipes for Cleveland, falling to 0-2-0 in net for the Monsters before Anton Forsberg relieved him and stopped each of the 14 Moose shots he saw the rest of the way. On the other side, Ondrej Pavelec provided a 34-save showing in net for Manitoba to improve to 3-1-1 overall this season.
