CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Iowa Wild in overtime on Wednesday at The Q by a final score of 5-4. With the win, Cleveland improved to 9-11-3-2 overall this season and with a .460 points percentage, remain alone in sixth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Monsters claimed a 1-0 lead in the first period on Wednesday when Sam Vigneault buried a five-on-five chance thanks to Calvin Thurkauf's lone assist, but Iowa rallied with three unanswered goals, from Mario Lucia at 8:22 on the power-play, Sam Anas at even-strength at 11:34, and Kyle Rau with the extra skater at 15:16, to take a 3-1 edge into the middle stanza.
In the second, Cleveland drew within a goal when John Ramage and Doyle Somerby combined to set up Jordan Schroeder for an even-strength tally at 5:26 that made it 3-2. Iowa, however, battled back to extend their advantage to 4-2 with an even-strength Luke Kunin goal at 12:57 of the stanza.
In the third, Paul Bittner drew the Monsters within one at 4-3 with an even-strength finish at 14:17, provided by Justin Scott, before Blake Siebenaler netted his first marker of the campaign at even-strength at 15:44, on feeds from Alex Broadhurst and Zac Dalpe, to push Cleveland into overtime tied at four. In the extra session, the Monsters claimed a 5-4 victory with a three-on-three Broadhurst goal at 3:39, thanks to Dean Kukan's lone helper.
Cleveland's Ivan Kulbakov stopped six of the nine shots he faced in the first period before Matiss Kivlenieks improved to 4-6-2 between the pipes for the Monsters by making eight saves the rest of the way in relief. On the other side, Iowa net-minder C.J. Motte is now 2-1-2 in goal following a 27-save performance.
