Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, were defeated by the San Diego Gulls in front of 11,735 fans at The Q on Sunday by a final score of 2-1. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 21-35-7-3 overall this season and with a .394 points percentage, remain alone in seventh place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Cleveland struck first on Sunday and grabbed a 1-0 lead thanks to an even-strength Kale Kessy marker at 19:33 of the frame, assisted by Jordan Schroeder and Calvin Thurkauf. After a scoreless middle stanza, the Gulls netted back-to-back five-on-five tallies in the third period, courtesy of Giovanni Fiore at 2:33 and Nic Kerdiles at 6:44 respectively, to claim a regulation victory by a final score of 2-1.
Cleveland net-minder Jeff Zatkoff fell to 2-7-2 in net this season despite stopping 26 pucks on Sunday while San Diego's Kevin Boyle denied 27 of the 28 pucks he faced in victory to improve to 17-10-2 between the pipes this year.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Wednesday road tilt vs. the Stockton Heat with full coverage, live from Stockton Arena in Stockton, CA, underway at 10:00 pm on Alt 99.1 and the Monsters Hockey Network.
