Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
Monday was an active day for the Quad City Steamwheelers. Monday marked the first day that the team got use of its home facility, The MARK of the Quad Cities. It was the first time that the team was able to use the facility, as The MARK hosts numerous events as well as the Quad City Mallards (UHL) hockey team.
The Mallards, who made it all the way to the Colonial Cup Finals and lost, shared use of the building with the 'Wheelers for the 'Wheelers first three home games, thus limiting the 'Wheelers to just gameday use of The MARK.
Once their season was completed and the ice was removed, the building, in essence, became the 'Wheelers. The Dixie Chicks and local high school and college graduations were held in the building, but once Friday, May 16th hit and the field was completely down everything was good for head coach Rich Ingold and the Steamwheelers.
Ingold received good news from the Steamwheelers staff, when not long after the 'Wheelers staff's weekly meeting with The MARK staff Ingold was informed that after the conclusion of the Green Bay game on the 16th, the field would stay down until the team's next home game on June 7th.
"It was nice to get in there," Ingold said on 'The Coaches Show' Monday night. "The bright lights, high ceilings, full field, the back nets and it's your home arena, it was nice to get into."
All of the afformetntioned were some things that the 'Wheelers were limited to at BGB Sports Complex, the 'Wheelers other practice facility.
For the rest of this month and the beginning of next, the Steamwheelers will be practicing at The MARK, allowing for what Ingold calls "the worst turf in af2" to smooth out.
Ingold also made some moves from the personnell standpoint Monday afternoon. WR/LB Tony Burrier was activated from the suspension list, now that he has things worked out with his jobs. Also, a former Iowa Hawkeye teammate of Burrier's (as well as a few other 'Hawks on the team) was assigned to the team by the af2 Monday afternoon.
OL/DL Pete Traynor, who stands 6'4" and weighs in at 305 pounds, joins the team after playing a back-up roll at Iowa.
With both of these assignments, Ingold placed OL/DL Scott Tyrcha and DS Lee Wiggins on the short-term IR. Wiggins, 6'0" 198 out of South Carolina, is still battling a hamstring pull he suffered on April 26th against Bakersfield. Tyrcha 6'3" 325 out of Valparaiso, is battling a shoulder injury.
The' Wheelers begina two-game road trip, beginning with division rival Louisville this Saturday night, 7:30 p.m. The following week, they will travel to Cincinnati to take on division rival and expansion Cincinnati Swarm. That game will also kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and both games can be heard on WOC AM 1420.
The Steamwheelers will then return home for two games against the same two teams. June 7th the 'Wheelers will play the Swarm to finish a home-and-home series with them and play Louisville on June 14th. Both games will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. at The MARK. Good tickets are still available for both games and can be purchased at The MARK box office or through TicketMaster (www.ticketmaster.com or 563.326.1111).
