Also in the Atlantic Division, the Portland Pirates (2-1) hold a 2-1 series advantage over the Connecticut Whale (1-2), having won the first two games of their series. Most recently, the Whale posted a 3-1 victory over the Pirates at the XL Center Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday.
The Monarchs come-from-behind victory on Sunday against the Senators is the second best comeback in the team ¬â¢s nine year playoff history. On Sunday, the Monarchs were down 3-0 following the first period and rallied back to edge the Senators 5-4 in overtime. On April 25, 2006, Manchester was down 4-0 against the Hartford Wolf Pack in game five of the 2006 Calder Cup Atlantic Division Semifinal Series and came back to win it 8-6.
Right wing Bud Holloway (3-2=5) recorded a hat trick and an assist against the Senators on Sunday, tying him for first place on the Monarchs squad in post-season points with five points alongside center Justin Azevedo (1-4=5).
Azevedo and Holloway are tied for second place among American Hockey League skaters in the post-season with five points.
Holloway ¬â¢s three-goal performance was only the second hat trick in the Monarchs playoff history. The first came nine years ago to the day, April 17, 2002, when right wing Adam Mair scored the franchise ¬â¢s first hat trick in the team ¬â¢s 6-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack in game three of the 2002 Calder Cup Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Mair ¬â¢s hat trick was the first time in franchise history, both regulation and playoffs, that a Monarchs player tallied three goals in a game.
Holloway now holds the Monarchs all-time post-season record for goals, as well as points. Holloway now has 10 playoff goals to his credit to go along with 19 points (10-11=19) in 19 games during the 2010 and 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs. Holloway edged out the previous franchise records set by left wing Noah Clarke, who recorded nine goals and 17 points (9-8=17) in 35 playoff games. Holloway accomplished the feat in 16 fewer games than Clarke.
Holloway also recorded an assist on left wing Dwight King ¬â¢s (1-2=3) game-tying goal, making Holloway the fourth player in the franchise ¬â¢s post-season history to record four points in one game.
Monarchs Players With Four-Point Games In The Calder Cup Playoffs
Bud Holloway (3-1=4) at Binghamton on April 17, 2010 - Monarchs win 5-4 in overtime
Alexandre Daige (0-4=4) vs. Hartford on April 21, 2006 - Monarchs win 6-5 in double overtime
Noah Clarke (2-2=4) at Hartford on April 25, 2006 - Monarchs win 8-6
Alexandre Daige (2-2=4) at Hartford on April 25, 2006 - Monarchs win 8-6
Holloway scored two goals in the second period during Sunday ¬â¢s overtime victory against the Senators, marking only the sixth time a Monarchs player has recorded two goals in one period in the team ¬â¢s post-season history. Center Trevor Lewis accomplished the feat twice during the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Holloway ¬â¢s game-winning overtime goal at 1:43 on Sunday evening was the fastest such strike in post-season history for Manchester, breaking the record previously held by defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (0-1=1), who scored 1:55 into overtime against the Worcester Sharks on May 7, 2010.
The Monarchs right wing also extended his franchise record for game-winning goals in the post-season to seven. He collected an AHL tying record of six game-winning goals during the 2010 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Holloway ¬â¢s three tallies in the playoffs are tied for the league-lead in goals.
Holloway is also tied with center Brayden Schenn (0-1=1) for the Monarchs lead in plus/minus with a plus-3 rating. Their plus/minus rating ties them for fourth place amongst AHL skaters in the post-season.
Holloway is tied for second place in the AHL with Monarchs defenseman Jake Muzzin (2-0=2) for shots on goal with 11 each.
Azevedo has recorded at least one point in each of the three games this post-season. The only other player to have also accomplished that feat is center Corey Elkins (1-2=3).
Azevedo ¬â¢s four assists tie him for the league-lead amongst playoff skaters. Azevedo ¬â¢s three power play assists also lead the league.
Elkins is tied for third place on the Monarchs post-season roster in points with three. Defenseman David Kolomatis (1-2=3) and King (1-2=3) also have posted three points during the playoffs.
Kolomatis ¬â¢ three points are tied for the AHL lead amongst defensemen, as is his one power play goal.
Kolomatis ¬â¢ game-winning goal in game one of the series is the lone game-winning goal by an AHL defenseman thus far in the 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Muzzin ¬â¢s two points are tied for fourth place amongst AHL blueliners this post-season.
The rookie defenseman ¬â¢s two goals lead league defensemen in tallies during the 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs.
Muzzin ¬â¢s 11 shots on goal also lead AHL defensemen and rookies.
Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (1-1) has appeared in three games during the 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs and collected a record of 1-1 with a 3.34 goals-against-average and a .902 save percentage.
Manchester netminder Martin Jones (1-0) replaced Zatkoff following the first period of Sunday ¬â¢s contest in Binghamton and registered his first post-season win along with a 1.44 goals-against-average and a .933 save percentage.
Jones replacing Zatkoff between the pipes on Sunday was the eighth time in franchise history that a Monarchs goaltender has been pulled during a Calder Cup playoff game.
Sunday ¬â¢s come-from-behind victory is also the second time in the team ¬â¢s playoff history that a goaltender has been pulled from the game and the back-up netminder skated away with the victory. On April 25, 2006, goaltender Barry Brust was pulled from the net after allowing two goals to Hartford in the first 46 seconds of the game. Netminder Adam Hauser replaced him between the pipes and the team rebounded from a 4-0 deficit to win the game 8-6.
