Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose couldn't spoil Lake Erie's first Calder Cup Playoff appearance on Saturday. But the Moose definitely stunned the Monsters with a last minute effort to tie up Game 2 on Sunday before winning in overtime. After splitting the first two games of the North Division Semi-Final, Manitoba's first round series with Lake Erie becomes a best-of-five scenario with the next three games taking place at MTS Centre.
Saturday, April 16, 2011: Manitoba 4, Lake Erie 6 Lake Erie's Matt Ford put the home team ahead early in the first Calder Cup Playoff game in Monsters franchise history. Manitoba answered with first period goals by Marco Rosa and Sergei Shirokov, but that would be the only Moose lead of the game. Lake Erie replied with three goals in the second period, scored between killing off four straight Moose power plays. Rosa tied a Moose playoff record with four points in the game (2g, 2a) but could not lift Manitoba past Lake Erie in a high scoring affair. The Monsters scored an empty netter to cap off the 6-4 win in Game 1.
Sunday, April 17, 2011: Manitoba 3, Lake Erie 2 (OT) After being called upon late in Game 1, Tyler Weiman made the start in net for Manitoba in Game 2. Manitoba's most effective line in the game was the checking trio of Garth Murray, Aaron Volpatti, and Rick Rypien. Volpatti opened the scoring midway through the first period and Rypien was credited with the eventual overtime winner. Before the extra frame, Marco Rosa pulled the Moose out of a tight spot by scoring with 49 seconds left to tie it up 2-2. Weiman made 34 saves in the 3-2 OT win against his former team from Lake Erie.
