LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

At Hartford (1/22): The Manchester Monarchs battled back to tie the game but fell in overtime, 3-2, to the Hartford Wolf Pack at the XL Center on Friday night. Centers Gabe Gauthier and Corey Elkins picked up tallies for the Monarchs. Forward Brodie Dupont and defenseman Nigel Williams scored for the Wolf Pack in regulation and left wing Dane Byers picked up his 10th goal in overtime for the win. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (18-11-4) took his second overtime loss to Hartford this season, stopping 33-of-36 shots. Wolf Pack netminder Chad Johnson (14-7-2) earned his 14th win of the season with 27 saves on 29 shots. Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Hartford was 2-for-5 with the man advantage.

Vs. Norfolk (1/23): The Manchester Monarchs fought hard but fell short to the Norfolk Admirals with a final score of 5-3 at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. The Monarchs Care Foundation teamed up with the City of Manchester Health Department to administer H1N1 flu vaccines to 236 fans during the Monarchs game. Center Gabe Gauthier, right wing Geoff Walker and right wing Kevin Westgarth found the back of the net for the Monarchs. The Admirals picked up goals from left wing Radek Smolenak (2), center Mitch Fadden, right wing Matt Fornataro and right wing Aaron Hall. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (8-5-0) took his fifth loss of the season, stopping 44-of-48 shots. Admirals netminder Jaroslav Janus (2-5-0) earned his second win of the season with 17 saves on 20 shots. Manchester did not have a power play opportunity in the game. Norfolk was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Vs. Hartford (1/24): The Manchester Monarchs were led by left wing Bud Holloway as they defeated the Hartford Wolf Pack, 6-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday night. Holloway (2), center Gabe Gauthier, defenseman Andrew Campbell, center Corey Elkins and left wing Dwight King lit the lamp for the Monarchs. Center Corey Locke picked up the lone goal for the Wolf Pack. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (19-11-4) earned his 19th win of the season, stopping 22-of-23 shots. Wolf Pack netminder Steve Valiquette (4-5-1) took his fifth loss of the season with 17 saves on 22 shots. Hartford goaltender Chad Johnson (14-8-2), who replaced Valiquette for the third period, saved 11 of the 12 shots that he faced in 20 minutes. Manchester went 2-for-2 on the power play. Hartford was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

NEWS & NOTES

After sharing the first place lead in the Atlantic Division on Saturday, January 23 with the Lowell Devils (27-17-3-1, 58 points) for the first time since October 18, the Manchester Monarchs (27-14-2-4, 60 points) beat the Hartford Wolf Pack (23-17-2-4, 52 points) with a 6-1 victory on Sunday, January 24 to regain sole possession of the division lead. Manchester is ranked third overall in the AHL behind the Hershey Bears (34-9-0-2) who have 70 points in 45 games and the Hamilton Bulldogs (27-12-3-4) who have 61 points in 46 games.

The Atlantic Division standings are tight as the Devils (27-17-3-1, 58 points) and the Worcester Sharks (27-14-1-2, 57 points) are nipping at the Monarchs heels for first place.

The Monarchs are 17-6-0-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season.

The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked fifth in the AHL. They have given up 26 goals in 196 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.

Their power play is ranked fourth in the league with 37 goals on 178 opportunities with the man advantage.

Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 34-of-47 games thus far this season.

The Monarchs are 15-1-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.

Center Corey Elkins (15-18=33) leads Manchester with 33 points.

Elkins is on a five-game point streak with four goals and three assists for seven points since January 16.

Left wing Bud Holloway (14-14=28) jumped into second place on the Monarchs roster with three points (2-1=3) in Sunday's 6-1 win over Hartford.

His 14 goals rank second on the squad behind Elkins and his 14 assists are ranked fourth on the team.

Holloway is tied for fifth in the AHL with five game-winning-goals this season.

Center Gabe Gauthier (8-19=27) leads the Monarchs with 19 assists and ranks third in points with 27.

Gauthier is also on a three-game goal-scoring streak with three tallies this last weekend.

Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (8-16$) leads Monarchs bluliners and ranks fourth overall on the team with 24 points.

Right wing Scott Parse (3-10=13), who is currently on recall with the Kings, leads the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-11. Defenseman Drew Bagnall (2-6=8) is close behind with a plus-10.

Center Tom Cavanagh has five points (3-2=5) in his first seven games as a Monarchs player this season.

Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 19-11-4 in 35 games of the season. His 19 wins are tied for third in the AHL.

Bernier's four shutouts are also tied for second in the AHL.

Bernier is ranked fourth in the league with a 2.01 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a.939 save percentage.

Netminder Jeff Zatkoff has played in 14 games for the Monarchs this season, recording an 8-5-0 record, a 2.36 goals-against-average, a.932 save percentage and two shutouts.
