MANCHESTER, N.H. -The Manchester Monarchs dropped their first home game of the 2018-19 season, 4-1, to the Newfoundland Growlers on Friday night at SNHU arena.

The Monarchs (1-1-0-1) scored late, but could not tie the game before the Growlers (3-2-0-0) tallied two empty-net goals to secure the win.

The Growlers opened the scoring at 8:59 of the first period, when Derian Plouffe scored his first goal of the season. Ryan Moore sent a pass cross-ice from the top of the zone, finding Plouffe in front of the net, where Plouffe snuck a low wrist shot past Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, to make the score, 1-0.

The Growlers extended their lead at 18:46 of the second period, when Marcus Power tallied his first goal of the season. Giorgio Estephan sent a pass to Power as he skated along the right wing. Power faked to the backhand and sniped a shot over the shoulder of Charles Williams, to make the score, 2-0.

The Monarchs cut the Growlers lead in half at 17:05 of the third period, on the first goal of the season by Nic Pierog. Tony Cameranesi centered a pass into the slot for Pierog, who one-timed a shot past the pad of Growlers goaltender, Michael Garteig, to make the score, 2-1.

The Growlers put the game to bed with two empty-net goals at 19:10 and 19:39 of the third period by Scott Pooley and Estephan to give the Growlers a 4-1 victory.
