Manchester Monarchs News Release
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Stefan Legein's overtime game-winning-goal capped a Manchester Monarchs come-from-behind victory over the Kalamazoo Wings, 2-1, on Education Day at the Wings Event Center.
The Monarchs (17-9-0-1) remain unbeaten against the Wings (10-13-2-1), and ended Kalamazoo's two-game winning streak.
The Wings got on the board first, scoring at 6:44 of the first period, when Lane Scheidl scored his 4th goal of the season. Monarchs goaltender, Cedrick Desjardins, made the initial save on a shot from the right point, but Scheidl found the rebound and tapped the puck past Desjardins for the 1-0 Kalamazoo lead.
The Monarchs found their footing in the second period, outshooting the Wings, 17-7, but Kalamazoo goaltender, Joel Martin, kept the Monarchs off the board, taking the 1-0 lead into the third period.
Matt Leitner tied the game at 13:36 in the 3rd period, scoring his 7th goal of the season on the power play. Leitner walked out from the right corner, throwing a short-angled shot towards Martin, squeezing the puck through the five-hole of the Wings goalie to even the game.
Legein ended the game in overtime, netting his 6th goal of the season at 2:38 in the extra frame. Legein took a stretch pass from David Kolomatis at center ice and beat Martin on a breakaway, high glove side, giving the Monarchs their only lead of the game.
The Monarchs are back on the ice tomorrow, Dec. 18 (8 p.m.), when they visit the Fort Wayne Komets for the first time in franchise history.
