Manchester drops to fourth place in the Altantic Division with two games remaining
MANCHESTER, NH - The Providence Bruins beat the Manchester Monarchs, 4-2, to take over the third seed in the Atlantic Division at the Verizon Wireless Arena in front 7,705 fans on Wednesday night.
Manchester (41-30-3-4, 89 points) drops to fourth place in the Atlantic Division. Providence (42-29-1-5, 90 points) moves into third place in the Atlantic Division.
Monarchs defenseman Joe Rullier took the first penalty of the game, 5:07 after the opening face-off, for hooking and two goals were scored within the next two minutes. Right wing Ryan Murphy collected a shorthanded tally, his second of the season, at 5:26 to put the Monarchs up 1-0. Murphy skated down the left wing and fired a shot at Bruins goaltender Derek Gustafson. The goaltender made the initial save and redirected the puck off the end boards. Murphy picked up the loose puck and banked it from behind the net off of Gustafson and barely over the goal line. Center Connor James and defenseman Marty Wilford assisted on the first goal of the game.
Center Nathan Robinson picked up a power play goal for the Bruins 45 seconds later to even the game at 1-1. Center Pascal Pelletier passed the puck over to Robinson at the left post who cut across the crease and sent a backhander past Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser. Right wing David Lundbohm also assisted on the power play goal.
The Monarchs regained their one-goal lead at 8:26 of the middle frame when left wing Dany Roussin deflected in a one-timer from James for his fourth goal of the season. Right wing Konstantin Pushkarev picked up the puck in the corner and passed it to the right face-off circle for James' one-timer.
It was not long until Providence tied the game at 2-2 as defenseman Chris Dyment blasted a slap shot from the point for his fourth goal of season at 13:13 of the second period. Center Nate Thompson earned the lone assist on the goal.
At 15:05 of the final period, the Bruins took the lead for the first time in the game. Center Ben Guite won the draw at the right face-off dot deep in the Monarchs zone. Guite won it back to defenseman Matt Lashoff who deked the Monarchs defense and fired the puck past Hauser for his first professional goal and the game-winner.
Center Tyler Redenbach finished off the Monarchs with an empty net goal from right wing Eric Nickulas at 19:37.
Hauser (22-17-2) took the loss with 28 saves on the night. Gustafson (5-1-2) earned the win stopping 26 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-6 on the power play. Providence was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
The Monarchs host the Lowell Lock Monsters in their final regular season home game of the 2005-06 season on Friday, April 14 with a 7:35 p.m. puck drop at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
