Monarchs Drop Game One To Bruins

MANCHESTER, NH - Center Pascal Pelletier netted two goals to help the Providence Bruins win game one of the 2007 Calder Cup Atlantic Division Finals with a 6-3 victory over the Manchester Monarchs in front of a crowd of 3,321 on Tuesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Game two is at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday in Manchester.
At 4:44 of the first period, the Bruins jumped on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal from Pelletier. The centerman stole the puck away from Jeff Guiliano along the right wing boards and broke in all alone on Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera. Pelletier let off a low wrist shot beating LaBarbera between the legs.
Providence increased their lead to 2-0 with a goal from left wing T.J. Trevelyan at 8:32 of the opening frame. With the puck in center David Krejci skates along the right boards, Trevelyan dug it out and skated toward the top of the right face-off dot. The winger an uncorked a wrist shot that flew over LaBarbera's glove and into the top right corner. Forward Sean Bentivoglio was credited an assist on the goal.
The Monarchs thought they got within one at 12:17 of the first stanza with a goal from left wing Noah Clarke that was waived off. Clarke beat Bruins goaltender Hannu Toivonen but the puck bounced off the post. The referee signaled that it was a goal but after conversing with the goal judge, he ruled it a no goal.
The Monarchs made it 2-1 at 8:56 of the second period with a goal from defenseman Peter Harrold. Center Marty Murray skated out of the left corner and sent a pass back to defenseman T.J. Kemp. The defenseman then sent a tape-to-tape pass to Harrold stationed at the right point. The rookie defenseman settled the puck and then fired a wrist shot beating Toivonen to the stick side.
On the power play, the Bruins made it 3-1 at 11:03 of the second frame. Krejci was stick-handling the puck around the back of the net and spotted Pelletier stationed on the right face-off dot. Krejci floated a pass over a couple of sticks and Pelletier one-timed it home over the glove of LaBarbera for his second strike of the night. Defenseman Ryan Glenn was given an assist on the tally
Manchester was able to battle back to within one goal at 18:28 of the middle period with a goal from center Patrick O'Sullivan. Coming off the penalty kill, right wing Tim Jackman passed the puck up to center Matt Ryan who spotted O'Sullivan in neutral ice. As O'Sullivan approached the net, he faked a cross-ice pass and then sent a low wrist shot through the legs of Toivonen.
Kemp tied the score at 3-3 at 4:42 of the final stanza with a power play goal. Left wing Matt Moulson was in the right corner and sent a pass to the right point where center Gabe Gauthier quickly redirected the pass over to the left point. Kemp collected the puck and threw a wrist shot on net. With right wing John Zeiler screening Toivonen, the puck snuck past the goaltender.
Just 15 seconds later, Providence regained the lead with a goal from defenseman Brian White. The draw at center ice was played back to defenseman Dwayne Zinger who sent a pass over to Bentivoglio along the left boards. He saw White streaking down the right side and pass the puck over to him. White skated in by himself and sent a wrist shot through the legs of LaBarbera.
The Bruins moved back up with a 5-3 lead when Krejci found right wing Nate DiCasmirro at the top of the left face-off circle. The right wing sent a low one-timer under the blocker of LaBarbera for his second goal of the playoffs. Right wing Jeff Hoggan received an assist as well on the goal.
After the goal by Discasmirro, Monarchs goaltender Barry Brust replaced LaBarbera.
With 37 seconds left in the game, Bentivoglio added an empty net goal for his third point of the night. Center Ben Walter and defenseman Sean Curry added the assists on the goal.
LaBarbera took the loss with 23 saves. Brust stopped the one shot he faced in 11 minutes of playing time. Toivonen earned the win stopping 36-of-39 shots.
Manchester went 1-for-8 with the man advantage. Providence was 2-for-6 on the power play.
