HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs announced today that the club has signed right-winger Sergei Kostitsyn to an Amateur Tryout Contract (A.T.O.).
Kostitsyn, 20, completed the 2006-07 regular season with 40 goals, 91 assists and 76 penalty minutes in 59 games with the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights. The 6-foot, 190-pound forward also registered 21 points (9-12-21) in 16 post-season contests before London fell in the Division Finals to the Plymouth Whalers in five games.
In two seasons with the Knights, Kostitsyn posted 209 points (66-143-209) and 154 penalty minutes in 122 regular season games, and collected 58 points (22-36-58) and 83 penalty minutes in 35 playoff contests. Kostitsyn also took home back-to-back OHL Rookie of the Month honours in October and November of 2005.
On the international scene, Kostitsyn has represented Belarus in three consecutive IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships, most recently notching a goal, four assists and 33 penalty minutes in six games at the 2007 tournament in Sweden.
The native of Novopolotsk, Belarus, was selected by Montreal in the 7th round, 200th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Sergei is the younger brother of current Bulldog Andrei Kostitsyn.
If Grand Rapids defeats Manitoba in the other North Division Semi-Final series, the Hamilton Bulldogs will continue their quest for the Calder Cup next Thursday and Friday nights, when they'll take on the Griffins in Games 1 and 2 of the North Division Final at Copps Coliseum. But, if Manitoba wins the series, the Hamilton Bulldogs will continue their quest for the Calder Cup next Saturday and Sunday nights, when they'll take on the Moose in Games 1 and 2 of the North Division Final at the MTS Centre, before the scene of the series shifts to Copps Coliseum for Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary) on Tuesday, May 8, Saturday, May 12, and Sunday, May 13 respectively. (Game 7 of the North Division Semi-Final series between Grand Rapids and Manitoba is tonight at 8:30 p.m.)
