Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Jordan Smotherman and Joel Lowry scored two goals each, and propelled the Manchester Monarchs past the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, 5-2, Friday night at the SNHU Arena.
The Monarchs (3-2-0-1) outshot the Swamp Rabbits (1-3-1-0), 48-34, in their first meeting of the season.
The Monarchs opened the scoring when Smotherman netted his 1st goal of season at 11:52 of the first period. Matt Leitner shot the puck off a Swamp Rabbits stick in front of the Greenville net, and Smotherman was able to take control of the rebound and lifted the puck over the shoulder of Greenville's goaltender, Brandon Halverson, to put the Monarchs up, 1-0.
The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead at 14:09 of the first period when Smotherman put away his second goal of the game. After receiving a backdoor pass from Leitner, Smotherman tipped the puck past Halverson to double the Monarchs lead.
At 0:33 of the second period, the Monarchs extended their lead to 3-0 when Tony Turgeon scored a shorthanded goal, his 1st tally of the season. While on the forecheck, Turgeon chipped the puck over the cage from the trapezoid off the back of Halverson and into the net.
The Swamp Rabbits finally got on the scoreboard after Caleb Herbert fired a shot past Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, for his 2nd goal of the year at 8:22 of the second period. After receiving a pass from Dawson Leedahl in the neutral zone, Herbert carried the puck down to the left-wing circle where he fired a wrister over William's glove to cut the Monarchs lead to 3-1.
The Swamp Rabbits added another goal to the scoreboard at 11:12 of the second period thanks to Sergey Zborovskiy. Zborovskiy fired a wrist shot from just inside the blue line after receiving a pass from Branden Troock that went over the blocker of Williams and into the net, to cut the Monarchs lead to just one goal.
The Monarchs fourth goal of the game was a power-play goal scored by Lowry at 10:47 of the third period. Lowry sent a shot that caromed off of Halverson but directly to Colton Saucerman, who passed the puck back to Lowry just above the hash marks who fired a wrister to make the score, 4-2.
The scoring ended when Lowry scored his second of the game, this time a shorthanded goal empty-net goal at 19:04 of the third period.
The Monarchs are back on the ice Saturday, Oct. 28 (6 p.m.), when they complete their two-game series with the Swamp Rabbits at SNHU Arena on College Halloween Night.
