Furious Beast Comeback Falls Short against Wheeling

October 28, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release

BRAMPTON, ONTARIO - Brampton Beast captain Brandon Marino scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year and Willie Corrin recorded three assist as a furious three-goal third period comeback fell a goal short as Brampton fell 6-5 to the Wheeling Nailers on Friday night at the Powerade Centre.

Wheeling opened the scoring in the first off of the stick of Garrett Meurs at 9:48.

Brampton didn't take long to respond, as Luc Olivier Blain potted his first goal of the season on the power play to tie it up at 11:05. The shot came in from the slot and Blain was able to track it down and bury the rebound.

Wheeling fought back and took a 2-1 lead with a goal from Jeremy Beirnes at the 13:13 mark.

Not to be outdone, the Beast tied the game up with a goal from Chris Leveille. Corrin curled out of the corner and spotted Leveille in the slot for the picture perfect one timer for Leveille's second of the season at 19:25.

The second began and it was all Wheeling as the Nailers scored three goals in the frame.

The first two came from Kenny Ryan at 13:25 and 17:35 respectively, while Reid Gardiner added another with less than a minute to go in the second. The Beast went to the locker room trailing 6-2.

The Beast had some fight in them for the third and began their comeback with a speedy breakaway goal from Kevin Dufour at 4:15.

Matt Petgrave sprung him on a breakaway and Dufour made no mistake, holding off the defender and flipping a backhand under the glove of Nailers goaltender Sean Maguire.

Brampton wasn't done yet, as Brandon Marino converted on a nice pass from Chris Leveille to make it 6-4 at the 6:26 mark of the third. That was also Corrin's third assist of the night, as he started the play on the halfboards.

Matt Petgrave wanted to get in on the action and crashed through a pair of Nailers players before getting a shot on net. The rebound came to the side of the net and Petgrave was all over it and lifted it over the pad of Maguire at 13:14.

The Beast would pull the goalie with two minutes left to play but despite a furious attack, were unable to pot the tying goal.

Notes: Molson Three Stars 3) Blain (BRA) 2) Corrin (BRA)1) Ryan (WHL). Both teams converted twice on the power play. Brampton has at least one power play goal in every game so far this season. The Beast and Nailers will play again Sunday, October 29th here at the Powerade Centre. Puck drop is slated for 2 PM.
