STOCKTON, Calif. - The Modesto Nuts used two separate four-run innings to hand the Stockton Ports their third consecutive loss on Monday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Modesto scored four runs in the fourth and four in the ninth on its way to a 9-3 win, assuring them a series victory in their four-game set with the Ports.

Modesto scored the first run of the contest in the third and took advantage of a Stockton error in doing so. With runners at first and second and one out, Forrest Wall hit a double-play ball to shortstop Richie Martin. Martin stepped on second for the first out but then made an errant throw into the first base dugout trying to get the second out, allowing Emerson Jimenez to be awarded home plate and give the Nuts a 1-0 lead.

Ports starter Kyle Friedrichs (3-2) suffered a bit of bad luck in the fourth. With two on and one out, Max White hit a fly ball to the warning track in right. Right fielder Joe Bennie, trying to make a sprinting catch, jumped in the air on his last stride and had the ball hit inside the pocket of his glove, bounce out of the glove and vault up over the fence for a bizarre three-run homer that gave the Nuts a 4-0 advantage. Wilson Soriano followed the homer with a double to right and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by Omar Carrizales to make it a 5-0 Modesto advantage.

Friedrichs would suffer the loss, going six innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits while striking out one.

Meanwhile, Nuts starter Jack Wynkoop (3-1) retired 15 of the first 17 batters he faced before surrendering a leadoff home run to Jose Brizuela in the sixth, his second in as many games, to give the Ports their first run of the night. It was the only run allowed by Wynkoop, who earned the win after going six innings and allowing four hits while striking out seven without issuing a walk.

Stockton pulled to within two runs facing Nuts reliever Colin Welmon in the seventh. Bennie led off with his ninth home run of the year out to right field to make it 5-2. John Nogowski followed with a single to right. Three batters later, Nogowski scored on an RBI single by Argenis Raga to make it a 5-3 contest. The Ports would put the possible-tying runners in scoring position, but James Harris grounded out to end the inning. It was the only inning worked by Welmon, who allowed two runs on three hits.

Matt Stalcup began the seventh inning in relief of Friedrichs and did not allow a run over his first two frames. Stalcup started the ninth and gave up a bunt-single to Soriano. Two batters later, Carrizales walked and Wall followed with an RBI single to make it 6-3 and chase Stalcup from the game. Lou Trivino took over and gave up a two-run single to Drew Weeks, the first batter he faced, making it an 8-3 contest. Modesto added another run later in the inning on a fielding error committed by Brizuela to run the score to 9-3.

Stalcup allowed three runs in two-and-a-third innings of relief. Trivino allowed an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning.

Craig Schlitter (SV, 1) pitched around back-to-back walks in the eighth. Working with a big lead in the ninth, Schlitter hit Mikey White to open the inning, gave up a one-out double to Raga and walked Harris with two outs to load the bases. Schlitter would get Martin to ground out to end the ballgame and preserve his first save of the season.

Harris, who drew a walk in the ninth, extended his consecutive-games on-base streak at home to 29 games. He saw his 19-game home hit streak come to an end.

The Ports and Nuts wrap up their four-game set on Tuesday at Banner Island Ballpark. Casey Meisner (0-12, 4.50 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Modesto right-hander Ryan Castellani (4-7, 3.86 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
