Amarillo Dillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Dillas played their best overall game, anchored by starting pitcher Ryan Mitchell's seven-and-a-third innings, allowing only two runs and eight strikeouts as the Dillas defeated the Coastal Bend Thunder 4-2 on Sunday night in front of an Amarillo-record 7,851 fans at the Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa.

Mitchell (3-1) didn't walk a single batter and allowed no more than four batters in any inning past the first. Thunder pitcher Frank James (2-2) got the loss, but pitched well, allowing all four Dillas runs and struck out five. Dillas hitters Joaquin Rodriguez and Adam De La Garza added solo homeruns in the effort.

Coastal Bend took an early lead as Albert Gonzales and Ron Fenwick led off with singles. Brian Nichols doubled to score Gonzales while Fenwick scored on an Alex Fernandez groundout for a 2-0 Thunder lead.

Amarillo wasted no time in responding as De La Garza sent the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for his third homer in three games. Stephen Douglas and TJ Warren followed with RBI singles for a 3-2 Dillas lead.

Both James and Mitchell pitched near flawlessly through six innings, but in the bottom of the seventh, the Dillas struck again. Again on the first pitch, Rodriguez blasted a ball over the left-center field wall for a solo homerun for a 4-2 Dillas lead.

Mitchell allowed a leadoff double in the eighth, but got a flyout for the first out, while reliever Tyler Pearson got two weak groundouts to end the inning with the lead intact.

Geronimo came in for the ninth, allowed a leadoff single, but got a popout and a game-ending double play to end the game with the Dillas winning 4-2.

With the win, the Dillas improve to 22-14 while the Thunder fall to 11-24. Monday, Amarillo will take on Coastal Bend for the final game of a four-game set at 7:05pm with the Aqua One Pre-Game Show set to begin at 6:50pm on AudioSportsOnline via www.myamarillodillas.com. Game time is tentative and is subject to blackout. The first 1,000 fans will receive a free logo baseball courtesy of Liquid Siding of Amarillo.
