Roadrunners Close out Homestand with Win

EDINBURG, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners closed their home stand after a 9-3 victory over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Eric Montoya (6-1) got the win after pitching five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out four. With the win, Montoya now leads the league with six wins on the season.

The WhiteWings (14-20) got on the board against Montoya in the top of the first with a two-run single by Yeurys Tejeda scoring Javis Diaz and Kevin Griffin making the score 2-0.

Wilmer Pino started the bottom of the first with a walk then stole second base. After a throwing error allowed Pino to move to third, Felix Molina hit a sacrifice fly scoring Pino from third cutting RGV's lead 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, Vincent Blue walked and Carlos Hereaud followed with a single that put runners on the corners. With one out, Hereaud stole second base and Blue came into score on the throw to second tying the game at two.

The Roadrunners (25-8) took the lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI triple by Wilson Batista scoring Pino from second. A throwing error then allowed Batista to score giving Edinburg the 4-2 lead.

Molina led off the bottom of the fifth with a double off of RGV starter Misael DeJesus (0-3). Blue then hit a two-out RBI single scoring Molina from second extending the Roadrunners lead 5-2.

RGV picked up a run in the top of the sixth with an RBI double by Eric Gonzalez that allowed Arlon Quiroz to score making it 5-3 Roadrunners.

Edinburg loaded the bases after two outs against the WhiteWings in the bottom of the seventh and Hereaud hit a two-run single to left field scoring Melvin Perez and Concepcion from second and third. Robert Matlock followed with a two-run triple to the right field corner scoring Blue and Hereaud extending the Roadrunners lead 9-3.

Ricardo Serrano, Ray Silva, and Aaron Guerra combined for three scoreless innings of relief giving Edinburg the 9-3 victory.

The Roadrunners head on the road for a four-game series against the San Angelo Colts starting Monday night at Foster Field. Wardell Starling (5-0) is expected to start in search of his sixth win of the season.
