Mississippi Blues News Release

Jackson, MS. The ABA Mississippi Blues opened their season Sunday against a tough West Texas Whirlwind team and came away with the victory. It was an exciting game with both teams scoring well and often. The Blues came out slow with the Whirlwinds jumping to a 12 point lead. But Ronald Ellis brought the Blues back with 8 quick points to make the score 22-18.

It went back and forth from there until the Blues took the lead at halftime by ten. The Whirlwinds came out strong in the third quarter to tie the score at 79 each but that would be the closest the Whirlwinds would get. the Blues outscored them 34-15 in the fourth quarter to win 113-94.

Rod Smith had a double double for the Blues with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Ron Ellis added 21 points and 4 rebounds while Jonathan Oliver came off the bench to score 18 and 3 steals. Bobby Johnson added 20 points and 7 rebounds.

Coach Price was very pleased with the effort and how they came out ready to play. "I feel that we have a great team that can make a run for the title in the ABA," said Price. "We just have to focus more on the little things that make a good team great."
