Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock - The Arkansas Travelers lost the first game of a six-game home stand 4-3 to the San Antonio Missions on Wednesday night at Dickey-Stephens Park. Missions right-hander Corey Kluber (2-3) received the win after getting help from his offense with a three run sixth inning. The Travs would battle back in the bottom of the sixth getting two runs, but the one run lead would be enough for the Missions to hang on to for win.
With their second loss in a row, the Travs fall to 16-27. San Antonio improves to 22-23.
Mike Anton started the game for the Travs and pitched four complete innings giving up one run on two hits. He started the top of the fifth and gave up four straight walks before leaving the game and turning it over to right-handed reliever Taylor Wilding (1-2) who recorded his first loss of the season. Kluber started for the Mission's and threw 5.2 innings giving up three runs on eight hits. Craig Italiano (9) came on in the ninth inning to shut down the Travs, and he did just that receiving his ninth save of the season.
The Travs struck first by scoring in the first inning after Carlos Colmenares led off with a triple to left center out of the reach of the diving Missions centerfielder Cedric Hunter. Colmenares came in to score after Andrew Romine hit a sacrifice fly to center.
After four shut out innings, Mike Anton started off the top of the fifth inning by walking the first four Mission batters Michael Collins, Sawyer Carroll, Beemer Weems and Jorge Minyeti. After the four walks Anton left the game with the bases loaded and the score tied 1-1. Travs right handed reliever Taylor Wilding entered the game and got two quick outs on a ground ball to first base where Efren Navarro fired home to get the force out. Alberto Rosario threw back to first where the ball got away from Navarro and was picked up by second basemen Ryan Mount. Weems rounded third and headed home on the bad throw, but Mount fired the ball back home and got Weems out at the plate for the second out. Wilding retired Andrew Parrino for the third out after he hit a fly ball to right field leaving one man on base.
Wilding came back out in the top of the sixth inning and got Cedric Hunter to ground out to second base for a quick out. Matt Clark drew a walk and was moved to third on a single by Luis Martinez. Michael Collins hit another single that scored Clark and moved Martinez to second. Wilding came out of the game with the score 2-1 and runners on first and second. Barret Browning entered the game and struck out Carroll swinging for out number two. Weems came to the plate and hit a single that scored Martinez bringing the score 3-1. Minyeti stepped to the plate and hit a single that got passed McAnulty in leftfield and scored Collins from third making the score 4-1, but Weems tried to score from first on the hit and was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
The Travs tried to answer back in the bottom of the sixth starting with a one out single by Colmenares. Colmenares was moved to second on a wild pitch by Kluber, and then scored on a single by Romine to bring the score to 4-2. Romine moved to second on the throw to the plate trying to get Colmenares, and he was scored on a two out single by Mount. Moore followed the single with single of his own, but Brian Walker flew out to leftfield to end the inning leaving the score 4-3 and that's how the game would stay.
The Travs return to the field against the San Antonio Missions on Thursday. The Travs will be sending right-handed Tim Kiely (3-4, 5.44) to the mound against Missions lefty Nathan Culp (1-4, 4.75). The action will start at 7:10 and the gates open at 6:00.
