Hill and Kopp Carry Cardinals Past Hooks

SPRINGFIELD, MO. - Catcher Steven Hill provided four hits and pitcher David Kopp worked seven strong innings as Springfield topped the Hooks 6-2 Wednesday night at Hammons Field in the opener of this three-game series.

The Hooks (22-23) are now tied with San Antonio for second place in the Texas League South. Both clubs trail first-place Frisco by four.

The Cardinals took advantage of Corpus Christi starter Jared Wells' lack of command to score three runs in the first. Wells (2-1) walked Adron Chambers and surrendered a single to Aaron Miles, putting runners at first and second with nobody out. Matt Carpenter followed with a single to left to plate Chambers for a 1-0 Springfield lead. On the play, left fielder J.B. Shuck's throwing error allowed Miles to take third and Carpenter to move to second.

Hill kept things moving with a single to get Miles home and push Carpenter to third. Andrew Brown's fielder's choice force out got Carpenter in for a 3-0 score.

The Hooks got on the board in the second when Jon Gaston led off with a majestic home run to right. The blast was his second of the season.

Corpus Christi edged closer in the fourth. Koby Clemens reached on an error by Carpenter at third and took second on a passed ball. Gaston drew a walk and both runners moved up on T.J. Steele's ground out to first. German Duran's chopping grounder to short plated Clemens to make it 3-2.

Gaston was stranded at third in that inning and left at third again in the sixth. Jhon Florentino was standing at third when the top of the seventh ended, and in the eighth, the Hooks left men at first and second. For the night, the Hooks went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

The Cardinals blew open the close game in the eighth. Hill opened the frame with a home run to left, his eighth of the year. Daryl Jones singled with one out and was on base when Antone DeJesus slugged his first homer of the year to right to cap the scoring at 6-2. Hill finished the evening 4-for-4 and was a double shy of the cycle.

Kopp (5-1) struck out a season-high eight batters during his seven innings on the hill. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and a walk. Casey Mulligan notched his first save with two innings of shutout relief, which included strikeouts of Corpus Christi's last five batters.

Wells was fine after that rocky first inning. He was charged with three runs, two earned, on six hits and a pair of walks over six frames. He struck out five.

The two clubs go at it again Thursday night at 7:10. Douglas Arguello (5-3) of the Hooks matches up against fellow southpaw Nick Additon (3-4).
