Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The San Antonio Missions took the series opener against the Springfield Cardinals with a 7-2 win on Sunday before the sellout crowd of 6,859 fans at Hammons Field.

After Springfield RHP Kurt Heyer (L, 3-5) and San Antonio RHP James Needy (W, 5-3) alternated a pair of scoreless innings apiece, the Missions (6-4, 42-38) broke through in the top of the third inning. SS Adam Buschini started the frame with a solo home run to left field, before Heyer battled back with a strikeout. CF Reymond Fuentes singled himself on next, and then raced in all the way from first base on an RBI double by 2B Casey McElroy for the 2-0 lead.

The Missions increased the advantage with two tallies in the top of the fourth. RF Hunter Renfroe started the frame with a walk, before Heyer responded with back-to-back strikeouts. Buschini then struck again with a two-run home run to left-center, increasing the advantage to 4-0.

After Needy wrapped up his sixth scoreless frame, San Antonio struck again with another long-ball in the top of the seventh inning. Heyer retired the first two outs in a row, but Fuentes kept the inning alive with a single. RHP Logan Billbrough took over to face McElroy, who promptly reached on a fielding error by 2B Breyvic Valera, putting runners on the corners. 1B Jason Hagerty, a St. Louis native, then skied a three-run home run to center field, padding the Missions lead to 7-0.

The Cardinals (5-5, 39-41), though, refused to go down quietly, rallying in the bottom of the ninth inning. SS Aledmys Diaz sparked the charge with a sharp single to open the stanza. One out later, 3B Patrick Wisdom belted a double to left-center field, putting both runners in scoring position. After a strikeout for the second out in the inning, CF Starlin Rodriguez laced a two-run single to left field to bring in both runners and get the Cardinals on the board. C Travis Tartamella followed with a free pass to further extend the game, leading to RHP Adys Portillo taking over on the mound. Pinch-hitting 1B Jonathan Rodriguez kept the game alive by reaching on an error, which also loaded the bases for LF Mike O'Neill. However, Portillo dug in and induced the final out on a fielder's choice, as the Missions hung on for the 7-2 win.
