SPRINGFIELD: One night after getting blanked in their home opener, the Cardinals returned the favor and handed the Missions their first shutout of the season.

Missions starting pitcher Cesar Vargas allowed one hit over seven innings and faced the minimum number of hitters. He did not issue a walk. His mound opponent, Daniel Poncedeleon, kept San Antonio off the board for 7.1 innings before turning it over to the bullpen.

Ramon Benjamin relieved Vargas to start the eighth and was promptly greeted with a double off the bat of Luke Voit. Benjamin worked a full count to David Washington, who then slugged an opposite-field two-run homer to break the scoreless tie. It marked the second straight outing in which Benjamin allowed a homerun.

The Missions outhit Springfield, 6-3, but were only 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, stranding a pair of runners at third.

NOTES: The Missions bullpen has started the season with two losses, a pair of blown saves, and an ERA of 5.62...Cardinal relievers have been charged with only five runs over 28.1 innings of work...Reliever Jason Jester was placed on the 7-day DL after having a wart removed from the middle finger of his pitching hand.
