Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

TULSA, OK - Alex Bregman belted Corpus Christi's first grand slam of the year in the sixth inning Friday night, powering the Hooks to a 9-4 victory over the Drillers before 8,047 fans at ONEOK Field.

Bregman's initial pro slam punctuated the Hooks' five-run sixth, which sealed the club's first set of back-to-back 2016 wins. Bregman has hit safely in all eight Corpus Christi games, batting .344 with four home runs and nine RBIs on the season.

Tulsa (2-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings opposite David Paulino. Doubles by Devan Ahart, Kyle Farmer and Drew Maggi keyed the production. Paulino, who struck out six in four frames, allowed the first two to reach in the third, but then reeled off six consecutive outs to finish his night.

Drillers starter Felipe Gonzalez blanked Corpus Christi thru the first four innings, holding the Hooks to a pair of singles.

The Hooks (5-3) finally broke through in the fifth with the first four reaching against Gonzalez. Jack Mayfield's lead-off double set the stage for a two-run home run off the bat of Ronnie Mitchell, which landed on Elgin Avenue. It was Mitchell's first hit of 2016. Alfredo Gonzalez then singled and advanced to third on a double by Teoscar Hernandez. Consecutive two-out wild pitches pushed the pair across for a 4-3 Corpus Christi edge.

Kyle Smith entered to pitch for the Hooks in the home half but faced only one batter after being struck by a line drive. Following a few test pitches, manager Rodney Linares opted to lift Smith as a precaution.

Michael Freeman was summoned from the Corpus Christi pen and proceeded to pitch three effective innings for the victory. The lone run against him came courtesy of a lead-off double by Jacob Scavuzzo and a Tyler Ogle sac fly in the sixth.

Brendan McCurry struck out four over two scoreless frames to end the game.

The Hooks aim for a series sweep Saturday night. Francis Martes (1-0, 0.00) gets the ball for Corpus Christi. Tulsa sends Scott Barlow (0-1, 0.00) to the hill. First pitch is 7:05.
