San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio evened its series with Corpus Christi after a dramatic, 6-5 win on Mother's Day at Wolff Stadium.
After being held to just one run in Saturday night's opener, the Missions tripled that total in their first turn at bat Sunday against starter Josh Hader.
Trea Turner led off the rally with a one-out double down the left-field line. After a passed ball moved Turner to third, Casey McElroy's fielder's choice brought in the game's first run. San Antonio added two more in the frame on a Yeison Asencio sacrifice fly and an Alberth Martinez double to right.
For a while, the three-run first looked like it would be enough for San Antonio starter Zack Segovia, who was coming off a disappointing outing last Tuesday at Frisco when he allowed seven runs in just three and a third innings. On Sunday, the veteran right-hander was much sharper, allowing just two runs on four hits through his first seven innings.
Corpus Christi's first run came when Teoscar led off the sixth with a homer to left. An inning later, Jon Kemmer's RBI ground out trimmed the Mission' lead to just one.
Segovia came back out for the eighth, but ran into trouble with one out when he fell behind in the count to Hernandez, 3-0. Instead of taking a pitch, Hernandez aggressively swung away, connecting on his second dinger of the game, tying the game at three.
After reliever Michael Dimock got the Missions through the rest of the eighth, the offense sprung back to life in the bottom half against relievers Daniel Minor and Juan Minaya.
Travis Jankowski began things with a one-out double to right, quickly moving to third on a Minor (0-1) wild pitch. Turner put the Missions back in front when he followed with a single into center. After Minor picked off Turner at first, he then walked both Casey McElroy and Hunter Renfroe. Corpus Christi would then call to the pen and summon Minaya, who promptly loaded the bases when he plunked Asencio. That brought up Martinez, who laced a two-run single into center.
The Hooks made it interesting in the ninth, plating a pair off Dimock, who had not allowed an earned run in nine straight appearances. Dimock (2-0) allowed three hits in the inning, the final one putting runners on first and third with two outs. Manager Jamie Quirk opted to bring in Tayron Guerrero. The hard-throwing righty ended the Hooks comeback attempt when he got Hernandez to pop out to catcher Griff Erickson behind the plate. It was Guerrero's second save of the season.
San Antonio (14-16) resumes its four-game series against Corpus Christi (18-12) Monday with a special 11:05 AM first pitch on Science Day at Wolff Stadium. Justin Hancock (3-1, 3.00) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with fellow righty Chris Devenski (2-0, 0.00).
Notes: Jankowski's eight-inning double extended his career-high, on-base streak to 26 games. Dimock's scoreless streak was snapped at 11.2 innings. Martinez (2-for-3) recorded his first three-RBI game at the Double-A level.
