Springfield Cardinals News Release

Tulsa, OK - The Springfield Cardinals struck for three two-out runs in the top of the sixth en route to the 3-2 win against the Tulsa Drillers before 3,654 fans at ONEOK Field on Sunday afternoon.

Cardinals RHP Andrew Morales (W, 2-2) got off to a great start, keeping the Drillers off the board and the scoreless tie intact through the first four innings of his quality start.

However, the Drillers (14-15) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. Leading off the inning, 3B Jarek Cunningham pulled a solo home run over the left field fence, lifting Tulsa into the 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals (9-21), though, responded right away with a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. With LHP Mike Thomas (L, 0-1) on the mound, 2B Jacob Wilson kept the inning alive with a two-out walk. After a single from 1B Jonathan Rodriguez, part of his two-hit day, C Michael Ohlman brought Wilson in from second base with an RBI single to left-center, tying the game. SS Aledmys Diaz then worked a walk, his second of the day, which loaded the bases and chased Thomas from the mound. RHP Jacob Rhame took over on the hill to face LF Anthony Garcia, and Garcia promptly swung the Cardinals in front with a two-run double tattooed to left field, scoring Rodriguez and Ohlman for the 3-1 advantage.

Drillers 2B Brandon Dixon started the very next inning with a solo homer against Morales, but Morales got out of the rest of the frame with no further damage to close his six-inning start with the Cardinals up, 3-2.

Springfield then received scoreless relief from a trio of Cardinals to keep the lead intact. RHP Joey Donofrio retired four sraight outs from the first out in the seventh through the opening out in the eighth. LHP Justin Wright then nailed down the last two outs in the eighth, but started the ninth with a walk to 1B Lars Anderson. With one on and no outs in the top of the ninth, RHP Heath Wyatt (S, 1) took over on the mound. With one pitch, Wyatt induced a 4-6-3 double play from RF Yadir Drake, followed quickly by a foul out from Cunningham, as the right-hander closed the Cardinals 3-2 win with his first save of the season.
