Missions Plate 14 Runs on 14 Hits in Friday Night Blowout Win

SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Missions offense was in full effect on Friday against the Midland RockHounds. The Missions won their third game of the series after plating 14 runs on 14 hits. Brandon Dixon and Juan Fernandez carried the offense with three hits and three RBI each. Edwuin Bencomo picks up his first career Double-A win in three innings out of the bullpen. The Missions won by a final score of 14-6.

Jack Cushing was the starting pitcher for the Midland RockHounds. After a scoreless first inning, the Missions took the lead with three runs on four hits. Yorman Rodriguez and Juan Fernandez began the inning with back-to-back base hits. Webster Rivas drove in Rodriguez with a double to left field. After recording the first out of the inning, Cushing allowed a two-run single to Kelvin Melean. The Missions took a 3-0 lead.

San Antonio improved their lead in the bottom of the third inning by adding three more runs. Tirso Ornelas doubled to lead off the frame. Brandon Dixon drove in Ornelas with a double of his own. Rodriguez hit a single and advanced Dixon to third base. Fernandez reached base on a fielder's choice and Dixon scored the second run of the inning. Following a strikeout, Fernandez stole second base. He came around to score on a fielding error from Cushing. Joshua Mears hit a soft ground ball to first base and Kyle McCann flipped it to Cushing who was covering first base. He dropped the ball and Fernandez came in to score. San Antonio improved their lead to 6-0.

Henry Henry was the starting pitcher for the Missions. He allowed his first hit of the game in the third inning. The right-hander had to pitch out of a jam in the top of the fourth inning. He allowed a base hit to JJ Schwarz and a single to Brett Harris. With two runners on and two outs, Henry struck out Marty Bechina to end the scoring threat.

Midland began their comeback and plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Austin Beck drew a leadoff walk and Michael Guldberg hit a single. Devin Foyle drove in Beck with a base hit to right-center field. After a passed ball from Rivas, Henry issued a walk to Zack Gelof which loaded the bases with no outs. Edwuin Bencomo came on to pitch in relief of Henry. He walked McCann which allowed a run to score. JJ Schwarz grounded into a force out which resulted in an out at home plate. The third and final run of the inning was scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler Soderstrom. The Missions held a 6-3 advantage.

San Antonio added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Facing Austin Briggs, Leyba reached base on a dropped third strike. Ornelas drew a walk and Dixon hit a single to load the bases. With two outs in the inning, Fernandez drove in Leyba and Ornelas with a double to left field. San Antonio improved their lead to 8-3.

The RockHounds added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Facing Edwuin Bencomo, Gelof drew a one out walk in front of McCann. The Midland first baseman launched a 437-foot home run to right-center field. His 19th long ball of the season made it an 8-5 ballgame.

San Antonio pulled away from Midland with a four-run seventh inning. After Briggs struck out the first two batters of the inning, he was replaced by Wandisson Charles. The right-hander issued a walk to Ripken Reyes who stole second base. Leyba drove in Reyes with a single to right field. Leyba stole second and third base. Ornelas drew a walk to put two runners on base. Leyba scored on a wild pitch and Ornelas advanced to second base. The Missions outfielder stole third base to record the fourth steal of the inning. On a 3-0 count, Dixon crushed a home run to left field to make it a 12-5 lead for the Missions.

The Missions made it a 14-5 ballgame in the bottom of the eighth inning. Facing Nick Highberger, Fernandez and Rivas hit back-to-back singles. Melean drove in Fernandez with a base hit. Lastly, Reyes drove in Rivas with a sacrifice fly.

* With the win, San Antonio improves to 24-25 (2nd half), 62-54 (overall) on the season

* Juan Fernandez: 2nd 10-game hitting streak of the season (Tied his career best streak)

* Missions recorded four stolen bases during the 7th inning, five in total

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Midland RockHounds on Saturday, August 27th. Left-hander Ben Krauth (1-3, 7.47) is scheduled to pitch for the Missions. Left-hander David Leal (4-5, 4.86) is scheduled to pitch for the RockHounds. First pitch is expected at 7:05 p.m. from Nelson Wolff Stadium.
