Springfield Cardinals News Release
San Antonio, TX - The San Antonio Missions evened the set with a 4-1 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 2,744 fans at Wolff Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals (19-27, 52-64) came out swinging with a run in the first inning for the second straight night. Facing RHP Jesse Scholtens (W, 7-2), SS Tommy Edman led off the game with a base hit to left. He moved to second when 2B Andy Young was hit by a pitch, before taking third on a fielder's choice hit into by 3B Evan Mendoza. With runners at the corners, 1B John Nogowski placed an RBI single to left-center, bringing Edman home from third for the 1-0 lead.
The Missions (23-22, 65-50), though, catapulted in front in the bottom of the second against RHP Matt Pearce (L, 0-4). With one on and one away, St. Louis native C Austin Allen got a hold of a two-run shot to right field, lifting the Missions ahead, 2-1.
San Antonio added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with RBI singles from SS Peter Van Gansen and 2B Matthew Batten, opening the lead to 4-1.
Scholtens kept the Cardinals at bay through the rest of his 8.0 one-run innings, before RHP Chris Huffman slammed the door with a scoreless ninth to close the 4-1 win for the Missions.
