Springfield, MO - The San Antonio Missions took the opening game of the series, 2-0, against the Springfield Cardinals before 3,012 fans at Wolff Stadium on Wednesday night.

Cardinals RHP Arturo Reyes (L, 5-4) and Missions RHP James Needy (W, 1-0) dueled back and forth with four scoreless innings apiece before San Antonio (5-7, 36-46) broke through with one run in the bottom of the fifth. C Griff Erickson started the fifth with a single, but Reyes battled back with a foul out and a strikeout to put two outs on the board. However, SS Jose Rondon drove a two-out RBI triple inside the right field line that scored Erickson from first base, lifting the Missions into the 1-0 lead.

However, Needy also continued to deal, lasting seven innings with no runs to keep San Antonio's narrow lead intact.

The Missions added a late insurance run against LHP Ryan Sherriff in the bottom of the eighth. Leading off the frame, 2B Diego Goris hooked a solo home run just over the left field fence, doubling the San Antonio advantage to 2-0.

Missions RHP Tayron Guerrero (S, 9) then took over for the top of the ninth and tossed a 1-2-3 final frame, closing the 2-0 win for San Antonio.
