Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Jharel Cotton fanned eight over six innings and Jarek Cunningham drove in three runs as Tulsa downed Corpus Christi 9-3 Wednesday at Whataburger Field before 5,234.
Cotton (3-0) scattered four hits and walked three. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound right-hander threw 107 pitches (65 strikes), his fastball flashing 96 mph at the end.
He had plenty of support, as Tulsa (8-4; 38-43) racked up 17 hits, including eight for extra bases.
Former Hook Ronal Torreyes drove the night's initial pitch from Brian Holmes over the left-field wall for a 1-0 Tulsa lead. Matters worsened for the left-hander from there. Peter Lavin reached on a bunt hit and Brian Burgamy walked before Kyle Farmer dropped a one-out, two-run double down the left-field line.
The Drillers doubled their advantage in the second while hanging three unearned runs on Holmes. His two-base throwing error enabled Adam Law to reach. Lavin's sacrifice fly accounted for the fourth Tulsa tally and Burgamy powered a two-out, first-pitch offering out of the park with Torreyes (single) aboard.
Holmes was tagged for seven hits in his two-frame, 46-pitch stint.
Newcomer Reymin Guduan entered and was touched for a run on Cunningham's sacrifice fly, which plated Shawn Zarraga (lead-off walk).
Jack Mayfield's fifth straight Double-A hit - a solo home run - put Corpus Christi (5-8; 53-30) on the board early. The Hooks pulled to within four at 7-3 during the fifth. Chan-Jong Moon drew a one-out free pass and came around on Brett Phillips' two-out triple to right-center. Phillips crossed in the wake of second baseman Law's relay throwing error.
Cunningham's two-run double off Travis Ballew was Tulsa's final salvo; Lavin, Farmer, and Yadir Drake posted three hits each.
Aaron West was effective in relief for the home club. He entered in the fifth and went on to strand five in scoring position during a 4 1/3-inning shift. Ralston Cash and Jorge De Leon tossed a scoreless inning apiece for Tulsa.
Stripes Thirsty Thursday means discounted beer and soda as the series continues at 7:05. CPL Retail Energy presents DRI FIT Neon Pink-Lettered Hooks T-Shirts to the first 2,000.
The mound matchup: Tulsa's Ross Stripling (1-2) vs. Adrian Houser (0-2).
