San Antonio Missions News Release
Springfield racked up 14 hits in its 6-3 win over San Antonio Thursday night before 4,722 at Wolff Stadium.
Early on Thursday, it looked like pitching was going to dominate again, with San Antonio's Bryan Rodriguez and Springfield's Kurt Heyer matching zeroes through three.
In the top of the fourth, the Cardinals finally broke through against Rodriguez (4-10), plating three runs on singles by Jonathan Rodriguez, Michael Ohlman and Breyvic Valera. An inning later, Springfield pushed its lead to 4-0 on Bruce Caldwell's sacrifice fly to right.
San Antonio got on the board against Heyer (2-0) in the bottom of the fifth, cutting its deficit to three when Luis Domoromo followed a one-out single by Adolfo Reina with a double into right. In the bottom of the sixth, the Missions made the score 4-2 when Diego Goris scored on a Caldwell throwing error.
San Antonio closed to within one in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Chris Perry courtesy of a single by pinch-hitter Casey Kelly. The right-hander, forced into hitting duties with the team undermanned, moved up to second when Jose Rondon followed with a sac bunt. That brought up Goris, who ripped a single into right-center field. Unfortunately, for the Missions, the hit was not deep enough to score Kelly, who was gunned down at the plate by right fielder David Washington.
After escaping the jam in the seventh, Springfield got back on track in the top of the eighth, putting the game away with a pair of runs off reliever Adam Cimber.
Kyle Barraclough tossed a scoreless ninth for the Cards to pick up his seventh save of the season.
San Antonio (5-8, 36-47) wraps up its three-game series against Springfield (8-6, 38-46) Friday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Elliot Morris (3-7, 4.80) will get the ball in the finale for the Missions, while the Cards counter with southpaw Kyle Hald (0-4, 6.40). The first 1,500 fans to enter Wolff Stadium Friday will receive a free Missions replica alternate jersey courtesy of McCombs Ford West.
Notes: Rondon's 0-for-3 snapped his nine-game hit streak, but Domoromo extended his own to eight.
