Missed Opportunities Doom Diablos

El Paso, TX - El Paso missed out on a lot of big chances to get runs and in the end fell 4-3 to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains at Cohen Stadium on Wednesday night. The difference was one unearned run in the eighth inning as El Paso is now just 2-10 this season when the game is tied going into the seventh. It is El Paso's third straight loss and they are now just 1-4 on the home stand.

El Paso scored first getting a run in the second inning on a Jeff Vincent RBI single. Shreveport took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. El Paso was able to retie the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Arnoldo Ponce drove in a run in the fifth and Vincent brought in another run with a two out single in the sixth. The Captains took the lead in the eighth inning when they scored an unearned run to take the 4-3 lead. With two outs and a man at third a soft roller to third was picked up by J.D. Reininger but thrown in the dirt to first to allow the winning run to score.

El Paso missed out on a lot of scoring chances. They loaded up the bases in the first inning with one out but a double play ended that threat. They got runners to first and third with no one out in the third inning but got nothing out of that chance. They also left the bases loaded in the sixth inning. They left 13 runners on base with eight of those base runners being left in scoring position.

Jesse Estrada made his final start at home for El Paso and also turned in his best performance yet. He took the tough loss as he battled into the eighth inning and allowed just three earned runs on nine hits. Estrada (1-3) gave up a lot of base runners but was able to work out of trouble in every inning but one. His struggle was getting the lead-off man out as the five out of the seven lead-off batters reached base against him.

El Paso had their second straight 12 hit game and this time outhit the Captains who finished with just nine hits. Kyle Nichols went 3-3 with two walks while Jeff Vincent also turned in a nice performance going 2-4 with two RBI. Adam Deleo went 2-4 as well and has now had at least one hit in every game but once since taking over the full catching duties.

Thursday will mark the final home game of the season. El Paso has not named a starter for the game but Shreveport will be going with lefthander Richard Salazar (9-4, 4.01). It is fan appreciation night and there will be fireworks that will follow the game. First pitch is slated for 7:05. Fans can listen in online at www.diablos.com.
