Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

EL PASO, Texas - Despite needing six pitchers and getting just one perfect inning, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains got the big hits (both with the bats and with their bodies), big pitches, and big fielding plays to beat the El Paso Diablos 4-3 at Cohen Stadium on Wednesday night, earning their seventh consecutive victory.

For the second night in a row, El Paso (30-60, 11-33 2nd half) took an early lead, this time taking advantage of a wild pitch by starter Ryan DiPietro on a strikeout of Jonathan Reynoso with one out in the bottom of the second. Adam Deleo singled with two outs to extend the inning, and Jeff Vincent singled to give the Diablos the advantage.

Despite having a plethora of baserunners, the Captains (54-37, 25-19) could not take advantage of leadoff runners in the first three innings, hitting into two double plays along the way. They finally broke through against Jesse Estrada (1-3) in the fourth, after Robert Perry led off with a single. With one out Palmer Karr hit an RBI double, and he scored on a two-out RBI hit by Jorge Alvarez, dislodging the ball from catcher Adam Deleo on a bone-crunching clean hit.

Uriak Marquez then brought in Alvarez with a first-pitch RBI single, giving Shreveport-Bossier a 3-1 lead. That advantage did not last for long, though. In the fifth inning, Kyle Nichols singled with two outs and went to second on the throw to put runners at second and third for Arnoldo Ponce. His bouncer up the middle was grabbed by a diving Alvarez, who threw to third to get Nichols having advanced too far for the final out, although a run did score to make it 3-2.

Mark Haynes got the first two men out in the bottom of the sixth, but then gave up back-to-back hits to the eight and nine hitters in the Diablos order. Lefty Aaron Cunningham then came in to face the lefty-swinging Vincent, and got beat on an 0-2 hit to right to tie the game. Dan Griffin (2-0) was summoned from the bullpen and got the Captains out of that inning, and pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the 3-3 score.

Bryan Sabatella singled off the glove of the shortstop Ponce to start the eighth, and then moved to second on a single by Christopher Garcia. A pitch after Sabatella stole third, Garcia was thrown out at second trying to advance on a pitch in the dirt, and the inning should have ended on Karr's bouncer to third. But J.D. Reininger's throw was low and skipped by Bryon Smith at first to allow Sabatella to score with the eventual game winning run.

Just as they did in the previous game in support of Griffin when the Captains took the lead in the eighth, Jameson Maj and Hector Carrasco locked things down. Maj was dominant in a perfect six-pitch eighth while Carrasco survived a hit and a walk in the ninth for his 20th save.

Notes: Including two conventional double plays, the Captains had six runners thrown out on the bases.15 of the 18 hitters had at least one hit in the game and 17 reached base safely at least once. The Diablos left 13 men on base while the Captains only left four.Estrada threw 121 pitches in his 6 2/3 innings, while DiPietro threw a relatively high 96 in five innings.
