Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
EL PASO, Texas - All nine Shreveport-Bossier Captains picked up at least one hit, as they outlasted the El Paso Diablos 8-6 on Tuesday night at Cohen Stadium, overcoming an early 4-0 hole on the way to their sixth win in a row.
The Captains (53-37, 24-19) also got an official playoff opponent on Tuesday, as the Pensacola Pelicans beat the Grand Prairie AirHogs 8-7 to ensure that one way or another, the Pelicans will be on hand to try to defend their South Division crown come the postseason in seven days.
Meanwhile, Luke Prihoda's Captains tenure did not begin all that well for the righthander, acquired last week from Grand Prairie. Although he picked off Jeff Vincent after a leadoff walk in the first, Prihoda then allowed four straight hits to fall behind 2-0, and Jonathan Reynoso hit a one-out two-run double to make it 4-0.
However, Prihoda settled down after that and only allowed one hit in the next three innings. Meanwhile, his mates tied the score with three runs in the second on four straight hits and one more in the third on a base hit by Andres Rodriguez.
But a hit and a wild pitch put Arnoldo Ponce in scoring position in the fifth, and Rico Santana drove him in to give the Diablos (30-59, 11-32 2nd half) the lead back at 5-4. They made it 6-4 an inning later, when Adam Deleo hit a sacrifice fly on the first pitch thrown by reliever Justin Young.
The Captains could not take advantage of base runners in every inning but the first, but got to within one run on Christopher Garcia's RBI single in the seventh and took the lead for the first time (and for good) with a three-run eighth against David Whigham (2-7). In that inning, Jorge Alvarez led off with a walk and moved to second when Uriak Marquez grounded out with Alvarez running. Brian Peterson, who was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, was then hit by a pitch, setting up Jovanny Rosario's game-tying RBI flare over third. Peterson hustled into third on the play, with Rosario following behind into second, and they both scored on Bryan Sabatella's single.
Jameson Maj and Hector Carrasco did the rest to extend Shreveport-Bossier's winning streak to six, with Maj pitching around a one-out double in the eighth and Carrasco working a perfect ninth on eight pitches for his 19th save of the season. Their efforts were the latter half of a great night by the Shreveport-Bossier bullpen, with Young, Dan Griffin (1-0), Maj and Carrasco holding the Diablos scoreless for the final 4 2/3 innings (although Young did allow the inherited run to score).
Notes: The Captains stole six bases, including four on a pair of double steals, although they did have two runners caught stealing.Mike Provencher pinch-ran for Alvarez in the eighth in his first game against his former team since he was traded for Jeff Hulett and two players to be named later earlier this month. He scored a run and then walked in the ninth and stole a base.Griffin earned his win by working out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh by striking out Jonathan Reynoso.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains continue their three-game series against the El Paso Diablos on Wednesday, August 25, at 8:05 p.m., Central time. The Captains will next be at home for Game 3 of the South Division Championship Series against the Pensacola Pelicans, at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, September 3. Postseason ticket information will be available on Monday. All games are broadcast streaming live on ustream.tv.
