El Paso Diablos News Release

El Paso, TX - El Paso once again fell down the stretch this time 8-6 to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains. The Captains scored four runs in the final three innings to snatch the lead and win the game. The Diablos are just 1-3 on the current homestand.

El Paso opened the night by taking a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Kyle Nichols and Bryon Smith both had RBI singles and Jonathan Reynoso brought in the final two on a double with two outs. Shreveport didn't wait too long to respond scoring three runs in the second and adding one more in the third to tie the game. The Diablos took the lead in the fifth inning on a Rico Santana RBI single and added one more run on an Adam Deleo sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Captains cut the lead to one with a run in the seventh and then went on to take their first lead of the night with three runs in the eighth inning. That would be enough to win the game as the Diablos had just one base runner over the final two innings.

For just their second time in their last eight games El Paso had over ten hits in a game, finishing with 12. Only two of the hits went for extra base. The Diablos got a lot of production from the two three and four hitters in their line-up. Arnoldo Ponce, Rico Santana and Kyle Nichols went a combined 8-15. Ponce went 3-5 and extended his on-base streak to 22 straight games. Santana went 3-5 with an RBI while Nichols turned in a 2-5 performance also adding an RBI.

William Buzhardt went the first six innings and left after giving up back to back singles to start the seventh inning. He appeared to be in trouble after allowing the Captains to come back to tie the game in the third inning but settled down to give his team six innings. He allowed five runs on 11 hits with five strike outs. Luke Prihoda made his first start since being traded to Shreveport. He had a rough first inning but then bounced back to pitch into the sixth inning. He allowed six runs on nine hits.

El Paso will try to even up the series on Wednesday night. El Paso native Jesse Estrada (1-2, 9.46) will be making his final start at home this season. He will face Shreveport's lefthander Ryan DiPietro (8-3. 4.15). First Pitch is slated for 7:05. It is a Military Night as all members of the Military get in free with a Military I.D.
