Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Lexington Legends (14-16) used a four-run eighth to propel past the Lakewood BlueClaws (9-20) 7-5 in the second game of a four game series, Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Park. The loss marks the third in a row for Lakewood and drops the squad to a season-high 11 games below .500.
Trailing by two runs, at 5-3, in the eighth, it was two errors that opened the floodgates for the Legends to plate four unearned runs in the inning. Humberto Arteaga hit a weak grounder to Roman Quinn at short, but the throw went into the dugout and put the leadoff man at second.
Two batters later it was Mitch Walding committing an error at third that allowed a run to score and Ethan Chapman followed with a single and Steven Inch hit Terrance Gore to load the bases with one down.
Raul Mondesi pulled Lexington even with an RBI fielder's choice, and again Inch hit a batter to refill the bases. It was Michael Antonio that followed with a two-run single and put the legends in front by two heading to the final inning and a half.
The BlueClaws' bats were silenced in the eighth, by Cory Hall and Mark Peterson. In the ninth, it was Peterson that locked down the save and the fifth win in a row for the Legends as he retired the side in order.
Lexington jumped on the board in the first inning off of Lakewood's Kevin Brady. After the leadoff hitter Terrance Gore singled and stole two bags, it was Bubba Starling with a double down the left field line that gave the Legends a 1-0 lead. Antonio followed with an RBI single and put the 'Claws in a 2-0 hole after half an inning.
Willie Carmona broke a 22 and two-thirds scoreless innings streak for the BlueClaws with an RBI double in the first, and cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
After a quiet second, it was in the third where the BlueClaws plated three runs and took a 4-3 lead. With one out, Aroni Nina walked the bases loaded and Walding along with Carlos Tocci plated two runs on back-to-back singles and pulled Lakewood even at 3-3.
Chace Numata connected with an RBI fielder's choice that plated Josh Ludy and gave Lakewood a 4-3 lead. The BlueClaws added another on a bases loaded walk issued to Walding in the fourth to give the home team the two run lead.
Brady went the first four innings, before handing things over to Zach Cooper in the fifth. Cooper pitched exceptionally well for the BlueClaws and delivered three scoreless innings.
Steven Inch (0-1) was the unfortunate pitcher of record for Lakewood. The righty earned a blown save, the loss, and was tagged for the four unearned runs in the eighth on two hits; he hit three batters and struck out one in his inning of work.
For the Legends on the mound, Nina lasted just two and two-thirds, after he gave up four runs. Ali Williams allowed a run over his two and one-third, but it was Hall (2-1) that earned the win and Peterson picked up his fourth save.
Deborah Heart and Lung Center Player of the Game: Josh Ludy (LWD): 2-4, 2B, BB
The Lakewood BlueClaws and Lexington Legends will do battle once again, in the third game of the four game set, at 6:35 PM Monday night at FirstEnergy Park. LHP Yoel Mecias (0-1, 6.16) will toe the rubber for the BlueClaws and will face RHP Bryan Brickhouse (0-3, 3.00) of the Legends.
