Greenville Drive News Release
After being swept in Rome, the Greenville Drive (10-19) were excited to leave it behind and try to turn things around. Sunday night in West Virginia brought more of the same, however, as the West Virginia Power (13-16) used a four-run second inning to race to a 6-3 victory.
D.J. Crumlich and Jonathan Schwind began the big second inning for the Power, as they smacked back-to-back doubles against Drive starter Francellis Montas (1-4) to bring home the first runner of the game.
After an infield single and a groundout, Max Moroff delivered the big blow with a three-run homer to right field to make the score 4-0.
John Kuchno (1-1) made sure that lead stood up, as he worked six innings while allowing just four hits and one run.
The Drive scored their only run of the game in the third. Jose Vinicio and Mookie Betts singled to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Cody Koback followed with a groundout to second to plate Vinicio.
The Power added a pair of runs for good measure in the bottom of the seventh against Drive reliever Francisco Taveras. Walker Gourley singled, moved to second on a bunt, advanced to third on a flyout, and came in to score when Josh Bell crushed a two-run homer to left field.
The Drive made things interesting in the ninth inning but fell just short. Aneury Tavarez led off with a single, and Power reliever Ryan Hafner later walked three batters to force in a run. Cody Koback then followed with an RBI single to right to force a pitching change, but Kyle Haynes came in and struck out Drew Turocy to end the game.
Bell had two hits and two RBIs for West Virginia, while Moroff added three RBIs. Tavarez and Turocy each collected a pair of hits for Greenville, while Koback drove in a pair.
The same two teams will meet again on Monday night in West Virginia, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05. RHP Pat Light (1-1, 4.91) draws the start for the Drive, while the Power will send RHP Tyler Glasnow (1-0, 1.80) to the mound.
