Misch, Grizzlies close out home season on a high note

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno starter Patrick Misch pitched a gem over the Portland Beavers, becoming the first Grizzlies starter to toss a complete game this season as the Grizzlies defeated the Beavers 7-2 before a record crowd of 13,970 Thursday night at the last 2006 home game at Grizzlies Stadium.

Misch, making his 10th start of the season for Fresno, tossed a seven-hitter with two runs allowed (only one earned) while walking zero and recording seven strikeouts. Misch became the first player to throw a complete game for Fresno since Matt Kinney did it on June 16, 2005 in a 5-2 victory over Colorado Springs.

Misch improves his record to 4-2 and lowered his ERA to 4.02 for the season with the Grizzlies. With the win, the Grizzlies finish their season at Grizzlies Stadium with a 34-38 record, which matches last year's home record.

On offense, the Grizzlies blasted 12 hits, three for home runs, four doubles and one triple. They struck first in the first inning as Clay Timpner led off with a blast to the right field gap. Timpner slide into third for the triple as second baseman Julius Matos' throw to try and get Timpner sailed out of played for an error, awarding Timpner with home and a 1-0 Grizzlies lead.

The Beavers came back with two runs in the next two innings, but the Grizzlies would take the lead back in the fourth inning as first baseman Chad Santos led off with a home run to right field, his 14th on the season. Abraham Nunez doubled and two batters later, catcher Yamid Haad doubled in his first game back with the Grizzlies. Jed Hansen followed with a towering two-run home run to left field. Timpner continued the inning with a single with two outs. He then stole second base and scored on Adam Shabala's RBI double to finish off the five-run inning for the Grizzlies.

Fresno added one more run for good measure in the 6th inning as Haad blasted a solo home run to left field for his third home run this season.

Timpner and Shabala each finished with three hits while Haad hit a home run, double and scored twice in his return to Fresno.

Portland starter Dewon Brazelton (5-7) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings for the Beavers.

The Giants announced their September callups after their win over the Atlanta Braves with six Grizzlies heading up to San Francisco. The players being recalled to SF are OF Jason Ellison, 1B Lance Niekro, OF Fred Lewis, catcher Justin Knoedler, RHP Brian Wilson and LHP Jonathan Sanchez. The Giants also called up RHP Scott Munter from Double-A Connecticut.

The Grizzlies close out their season with a four-game series in Las Vegas starting Friday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Matt Kinney takes the mound for Fresno and will face RHP Adam Thomas for the 51s.
